Trust your Body. Trust your Baby: A Quick Overview of the Rainbow of Breastmilk Colors 🌈

Yellow/Gold/Dark Orange:
•Common in the early days
•Colostrum-This nutrient-dense, antibody-rich milk supports immune protection and newborn transition.
-Often referred to as “liquid gold”

Blue-Tinted:
•Foremilk- Typically the first milk expressed. Thinner and higher in lactose, playing an important role in brain development and hydration.

Creamy White:
•Hindmilk- Released later in a feeding. Higher in fat, providing sustained energy and helps support healthy weight gain.
-Sometimes if a baby isn’t gaining weight, there’s methods to help ensure baby is getting correct amounts of this… a doula or lactation professional are great educational resource for this!

Pink / Red:
•Often caused by a small amount of blood from a clogged duct or ni**le irritation.
•Usually safe, but consult your provider if the color persists or is accompanied by pain, fever, or worsening symptoms.

Green:
•Often linked to green foods, supplements, or dyed beverages.

Your milk adapts constantly to meet your baby’s needs. Color variations are often just part of that natural process but if anything feels off or you’re ever uncertain, it’s always okay to reach out for support. You know your body and your baby best. ✨ Doulas are a great educational and support resource for breastfeeding!

Why Postpartum Support Matters:
For most of human history, new parents were never left to figure out the early weeks alone. Communities gathered around families with a new baby: elders passed on wisdom, neighbors prepared food, and loved ones cared for older siblings while parents rested and bonded with their newborn. The phrase “it takes a village” comes from a truth that our modern world has forgotten.
Today, many parents find themselves home within days of birth, expected to heal, learn to feed, and care for a baby, most often without consistent help. This isolation is not how our bodies or babies were designed to thrive. Healing after birth is physical and emotional. Without support, it’s easy for exhaustion and loneliness to take over. Research shows that strong postpartum support lowers the risk of postpartum mood disorders, improves breastfeeding success, and increases overall family well-being.
How a Postpartum Doula Fills the Gap:
You were never meant to do this alone, but in all reality, sometimes the village doesn’t exist anymore. I’d love to become a part of yours!

Trust Your Body, Trust Your Baby:

The Fourth Trimester

We usually hear about the three trimesters of pregnancy, but there’s one more that often gets overlooked:
The Fourth Trimester
Also know as the first 12 weeks after birth. This season is big. It’s raw. It is supposed to be that way.

Your Baby:
Your baby just spent approximately nine months in the womb where everything was warm, dark, and safe. The outside world feels huge and overwhelming at first. That’s why your baby wants to be close, to feed often, to be held, to sleep on your chest. These aren’t “bad habits.” They are survival instincts and ways your baby feels secure. Remember, that you can NOT spoil a newborn! These are needs that your baby and body were designed to do during this time. Their brain is growing rapidly, their digestive system is still maturing, and their sleep cycles are short and scattered. They rely on frequent feeding and closeness to regulate temperature, heart rate, and stress levels.

Your Body:
Your body is healing from pregnancy and birth. Your hormones are shifting dramatically. You’re learning your baby’s unique cues, while also learning who YOU are in this new season of parenthood. When a baby is born, a whole new faucet to the mother’s identity is also born. You are shifting from pregnancy to lactation, your uterus is contracting back to size, your body is healing from birth, and your milk supply is regulating. Emotionally, your brain is also rewiring to heighten bonding and responsiveness to your baby. It’s normal to feel tender, tired, and unsure.

Ways you can navigate this new season:
•Slow down
•Accept help when it’s offered
•Set realistic goals for yourself, and strip off false standards of motherhood
•Rest when you can
•Remember that feeding often, being needed constantly, less sleep, and having ups and downs are all a part of this season. It may often feel like you are not doing enough, but remind yourself you just created life and are now cultivating it. You are powerful and designed for this!

How a Postpartum Doula Can Help:
•Support you with feeding (breast or bottle)
•Help you understand baby’s cues and rhythms
•Offer hands-on newborn care so you can rest
•Provide emotional support
•Assist with meals, light chores, or sibling care
•Support you in reminding you that what you and your baby are experiencing is normal and a season

✨ Trust your baby: They’re adjusting to life outside the womb, and they know what they need.
✨ Trust your body: It’s healing, adapting, and providing for your baby.

The fourth trimester isn’t about “getting back to normal.” It’s about creating YOUR new normal together. The fourth trimester is not a test to pass, or a moment in time where you are “supposed to have it all together”. It’s a season to be lived through with lots of grace. One day, you’ll look back and see how far both you and your baby have come!

Mental Health Disclaimer:
Postpartum can feel overwhelming and sometimes it’s more than just the “baby blues.” If you’re experiencing persistent sadness, anxiety, scary thoughts, or just don’t feel like yourself, you are not alone and you deserve help. Here are some helpful resources:

Trust Your Body, Trust Your Baby:
Feeding Cues

Did you know that your baby tells you they’re hungry before they cry? Crying is actually a late sign, and it can make feeding a little more challenging. Learning the earlier cues helps things feel go a little smoother!

Early Signs:
•Waking or stirring
•Turning head, rooting
•Hands to mouth
•Lip smacking or sucking noises

Active Signs:
•Squirming, stretching
•Getting more vocal or fussy
•Moving arms and legs around more frequently

Late Sign:
•Crying
-baby is upset and harder to settle, however as you familiarize yourself with baby’s ways of communicating with you, you’ll be able to hopefully soothe baby before this sign happens!

The more you watch, the easier it is to notice your baby’s little signals. Plus the more you respond, the more confident you’ll feel.

✨ Trust your baby to show you what they need.
✨ Trust yourself to recognize and respond.

Trust Your Body. Trust Your Baby:
Cluster Feeding

When your baby suddenly wants to feed every hour (or even more), it can feel overwhelming, exhausting, and may even make you wonder if something is wrong with you or your baby. This is called cluster feeding, and it’s completely normal and healthy!

What is Cluster Feeding?
Cluster feeding is when a baby feeds very frequently over a period of hours, often more noticeable in the evenings. It can feel like you’re nursing nonstop or that your baby is never satisfied. This usually happens in the first six weeks, around three months, and again around six months.

Why Does Cluster Feedinf Happen?
Babies cluster feed for a few key reasons:
•To signal your body to increase milk supply
•During growth spurts
• For comfort

What You Can Do:
•Get cozy and remind yourself this is temporary
•Ask a partner or support person to keep you hydrated and fed
•Remember: this phase usually passes within a few days, and reflect on the amazing work your body is doing for your baby

FAQs on Cluster Feeding
“Can babies who drink formula cluster feed?”
Yes! Breast milk is digested faster than formula, so it may look a little different, but babies can still want smaller, more frequent feedings.

“Does cluster feeding mean my baby isn’t getting enough?”
Not necessarily! Babies may cluster feed for many reasons, including growth spurts and comfort. Signs your baby is getting enough include steady weight gain, enough wet diapers, and overall contentment between feeds.

When to Contact Your Care Provider:
•Fewer than 6 wet diapers per day
•Poor weight gain or noticeable weight loss after the newborn period
•Ongoing pain while nursing
•Baby seems lethargic
•Cluster feeding happening around the clock for longer than a few days

Cluster feeding can feel tough, but it may not be a problem to fix, it’s a sign your baby and body are working together.

🍂✨HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALL! ✨🍂

As we welcome fall, one of my favorite times of the year, we're also stepping into cold, flu, and germ season! And with that, here's an important reminder:

‼️ PLEASE DO NOT KISS BABIES.

It can feel natural to want to love on a new little one, but even the smallest kiss can pass along viruses like RSV, flu, COVID-19, and even cold sores (herpes simplex), all of which can be very serious, even life-threatening, for newborns. New babies have immune systems that are much more underdeveloped than ours. What might be a “mild cold” for us could mean hospitalization for them.

What can you do instead?

The best way to show love is to wash your hands, keep a respectful distance if you're feeling under the weather, and shower that baby and family with kind words, meals, and support instead of kisses!!!

Families deserve to set boundaries to protect their little ones, and those boundaries are rooted in love and wanting to keep their babies healthy.

Let's keep our tiniest of friends safe and thriving this fall season. 💕HAPPY FALL YA'LL 🍂
