Happy Valentines Day! Just a reminder that self-love is just as important as loving others.

A client said something this week that was so powerful…she said that her biggest hangup in implementing changes is not prioritizing herself. Whoa! I put that in her notes in capital letters to remind her that it was one of her “nutrition” goals. 😊

Radical self-love can be that spark that sets off a string of habit change. 💕

Fortunate to grab an audience spot during book tour in DC!

Ashley and discussed how GLP-1 agonists should be an accessible tool and not necessarily a complete solution in someone’s weight health journey. Assessing the totality of the environment (including past experiences), current lifestyle and biomarker data and optimizing digestive health (cue her book) are key considerations when utilizing these medications.

“Your Best Shot” encompasses a comprehensive approach to evaluating your metabolic health weight ecosystem, particularly valuable when considering helper medications. And given that 90%+ of Americans are metabolically unhealthy, this book could not be more timely.

The MMC or migrating motor complex exists to make sure we “clean house” post eating. When we eat erratically, too often, or too late, we turn this protective “sweeping” mechanism off, which can lead to changes in the way we digest food.

If you are experiencing digestive changes that just happened to start in midlife, let’s talk. Website link to bio.

Supporting weight balance in midlife needs a toolkit makeover - the same strategies that worked in our 20s and 30s are no longer viable due to our changing internal landscape. Besides hormone fluctuations our sensitivity to stress increases and with it we see a less tolerant operating system. Our ability to burn fat takes a nosedive and our satiety signaling changes. It’s not a calories in, calories out equation, although there is a drop of about 300kcal in usage.

If you’d like to learn how to work with your body and not against it, let’s chat. Contact info in BIO.

Twenty years ago today, I lost my Dad to one of the most aggressive forms of cancer: glioblastoma multiforme, a Stage IV brain cancer. It was a defining moment in my life, because up until that point I treated medicine as a sure thing, a cure-all. Walking through treatment with him and watching his decline in real time, I realized medicine did not have all the answers. It could not explain why this happened, and especially why it happened to him. My dad was gone in fifteen short months.

As time passed, I grew increasingly curious about cancer, about metabolism, and about alternative approaches to healing. Discovering functional medicine and systems biology opened my eyes to how derailed metabolic patterns can drive cancer growth through changes at the cellular level, especially in the mitochondria. Part of the reason I became a nutritionist was to help prevent as many cancer diagnoses as possible by addressing these underlying patterns. Metabolic health is now the heart of my practice, because whether someone is facing cancer or navigating midlife mayhem, metabolism is always part of the story. Supporting it takes time, patience, and curiosity, and so much of the work comes back to daily food patterns and practices.

On the outside, my Dad looked healthy—strong and active—but his love of sugar, constant hyper stress responses, and ongoing exposure to toxins all likely contributed to his vulnerability to cellular change. Today, when I support clients, I think of him. His story is why I am so passionate about helping people understand that their everyday choices are powerful levers for metabolic health, resilience, and longevity. Honoring his memory means doing this work – thanks Dad, I love you and miss you.

Legumes are a boon for midlife! They are versatile and can be added to all meals and the sprouted variety cook quickly. Legumes act as selective estrogen receptor modulators pushing on the beta receptor, which is abundant in bone, cardiovascular tissue, as well as nervous system tissue. We will talk about legumes and their benefits in my “Bone Focused Nutrition Program” starting January 23 (link in bio).

Growth for me in 2025 meant living in discomfort: both literally and figuratively. The beginning part of 2025 was dismal and dark, but learning to find gratitude created space for the subsequent positive lived experiences. That is why as 2025 closes, I’m:

*grateful for an amazing young doctor who recognized that my husband had a very serious spine infection
*grateful to friends who brought us nourishment as we juggled daily antibiotic infusions and subsequent reactions
*grateful for my girls who continue to push the envelope with their knowledge and passions
*grateful to my family who support and tolerate the many new habits we continue to implement for the purpose of supporting health and longevity
*grateful for a year of mentorship with the amazing Camille Freeman (I definitely need more of her wisdom in 2026)
*grateful to the many clients who entrust me with their most prized possession - their health, and for the challenging discussions that ensue
*grateful for the doctors of Pearls Women’s Health who support nutrition therapy for their patients
*grateful for the Metropolitan Mavens who have made networking enjoyable and inclusive (, )
*grateful for the many colleagues I’ve met who share their amazing gifts with the world and with whom I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating (, , , .gabrielavansickle, , , , .elevated.plate)

The sentiment that every day is a gift is not lost on me and I’m holding my heart open to the gifts that 2026 has in store! Happy New Year everyone!

Your bone cells are working hard daily to support your skeleton - they function on a circadian rhythm, much like your digestive system. Leafy greens, omega-3 fatty acids, and highly pigmented foods support a strong skeleton and a diverse gut microbiome.

I feel so strongly about supporting bones that I’ll be hosting a small group program in January to dive into this topic. More information in my bio. 🦴
