Today, we honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson, a pioneering civil rights leader who dedicated more than five decades to fighting for justice, equality, and dignity for all people. Reverend Jackson was a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and became one of the most influential voices of the civil rights movement, advocating for voting rights, economic opportunity, and inclusion across communities.

Yesterday, our community traveled to Annapolis for Developmental Disabilities Day to speak with legislators, fight proposed budget cuts, and protect critical services that people with disabilities rely on to live full and meaningful lives. That advocacy is deeply connected to the legacy Jesse Jackson leaves behind. His lifelong work reminds us that progress happens when people show up, speak out, and demand fairness for those whose voices are too often overlooked.

As we continue observing Black History Month, we reflect on the power of leadership rooted in listening, courage, and collective action. Jesse Jackson’s message of dignity and justice continues to inspire movements today, including the ongoing fight to protect disability services and ensure equal access and opportunity for all.

Thank you to the hundreds of passionate advocates who showed up for Developmental Disabilities Day at the legislature yesterday.

From the program at the Graduate Hotel to the rally on Lawyers Mall, our community came together. People with developmental disabilities, families, Direct Support Professionals, providers, and legislative champions united with one clear message:

These are our lives.

Your presence matters. Your stories matter. And together, we made it clear that the services and supports funded through DDA are essential to the everyday lives of people across Maryland.

We are grateful for everyone who joined us in Annapolis.

As part of Black History Month, we are highlighting Barack Obama, who was named the favorite president by Conrad, Dominic, Matija, and Emily during our group discussion.

President Obama made history in many ways. He was the first African American president of the United States and also became the first African American president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review. He was sworn into office using the same Bible as Abraham Lincoln, symbolizing continuity and progress in American history. President Obama is also one of the few left-handed U.S. presidents. In 2009, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in international diplomacy.

This post builds on our Presidents Day conversation about leadership, fairness, and being heard. President Obama’s legacy reminds us that representation matters and that leadership rooted in listening, trust, and inclusion can create meaningful change.

Today is National Random Acts of Kindness Day!

We encourage everyone to brighten someone’s day with a small act of kindness.

Whether it’s holding the door for a neighbor, offering a helpful word to a friend, smiling at someone you pass, or doing something thoughtful for a stranger, kindness has the power to lift spirits and create connections.

Like our conversations about leadership, fairness, and listening, kindness is just as important. It helps make our community stronger, more inclusive, and more joyful for everyone.

Happy Presidents Day! Today our Social Media Group talked together about presidents, leadership, and what being treated fairly means to us. When we think of Presidents Day, we think about how their leadership impacts people’s lives.

When we imagined being president for a day, we all had different ideas. Mike shared that if he were president, he would lower taxes. Dominic said that being president would mean he could enjoy living in the White House. Emily said she would enjoy being the first woman president. As a group, we agreed that if we were president, we would enjoy working out of the White House instead of our hometowns.

We also talked about what makes a good leader or president. We believe a good president leads by example, listens to what the people want, cares about the planet, and is someone the people can trust.

We discussed how a good president can support people with disabilities. We believe presidents should listen to their people and have real discussions about proper funding. We also agreed that there should be handicap access everywhere so everyone can participate fully in their communities.

When we talked about what being treated fairly means, we agreed that it means having equal access and opportunities. It also means having the proper funds to support programs and activities that help people live full and meaningful lives.

Today, we celebrate leadership, fairness, and the importance of listening to all voices.
