He Has Stood Beside Her Body for Three Days
On a slow Idaho oxbow, a male Trumpeter Swan stands at the edge of the reeds. His mate, the female he has lived with for nine years, is lying half-submerged at his feet. She was struck by a power line at dusk on Thursday. He has not eaten since.
He arches his neck over her. He nudges her wing with his bill. When another swan approaches, he raises himself in threat — even other Trumpeters are not allowed near her.
This is the third dawn.
We say swans are sentimental clichés. We use them on wedding cards. We do not ask what their pair-bonds actually look like.
In reality, the native Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator, Status: Recovering, the largest waterfowl in North America) forms pair-bonds that, in long-term banding studies, average over a decade and routinely exceed twenty years. After mate death, surviving swans have been observed standing vigil for up to seven days. Some refuse to migrate. Some never re-pair.
The behavior is documented across waterbird species. The biologists who first described it tried other words. Eventually, in the literature, they used the only word that fit: vigil.
He will leave her body when his own body cannot stand any longer.

I will occasionally offer a sale here because I know that there are souls on the other side who definitely want to talk to their loved ones here but our bu****it concept of money gets in the way because of either a bad economy or simply life circumstance. I want people to take advantage of it because it's not about the money for me as much as being of service. if you can afford the regular rate great then go ahead and do that! Otherwise no one's going to know if you take advantage of the sale except you! I'm not desperate as you can see by my calendar. I do it sincerely out of love for God, for my clients on this side and especially the other side and of course the purpose of my being here. My rates are already great and I know that and at some point when my business model changes in a few weeks I'm going to be changing the prices, too. I have had some responses about my sales in the past with people sending me well wishes as if something is wrong or perhaps I'm starving in the streets? While I most definitely appreciate the concern and love, I'm going to say this and you know I say what I need to say, LOL! Please get that bu****it out of your head. I'm not blaming you. I'm blaming the society that put that idea in your head. When it comes to me, I want you to rethink that whole concept. I know my job well and I've done it for a very long time. I keep plenty busy. I do my sales literally out of love. When it comes to myself and my purpose, please get any of your perceptions about money out of your head. I've already been dead and I don't give a s**t about money. I give a s**t about people living and dead doing my job for them in service to God!
