As of today, I have officially wrapped up doula duties for 2023. My busiest and most exciting year yet!

The good news is that all the hustle and bustle of balancing family, a busy client-load, and keeping a high GPA as I prepare my nursing school applications will soon come to a close and I will have plenty of downtime to share some of the amazing birth stories from the year.

The bad news is, it will truly be downtime, as I recover from shoulder surgery to repair an injury sustained at the height my most busy on-call time over the summer. Surgery is booked for December 15th, just one day after my last final exam and one day before my 34th birthday! Because what better way to celebrate than to put the wheels in motion to finally saying goodbye to the pain that has been weighing me down these past months.

If you feel so inclined: a lovely client, turned great friend, has set up a meal train for our family to help ease the madness of recovering from surgery as the primary parent to young children. Furthermore, I would be incredibly grateful for all the good vibes, positive thoughts, and prayers for a smooth and speedy healing.

Today, World Doula Week proposed a question; how do I make a difference?

I hesitated a little, feeling put on the spot. How *do* I make a difference?

Then I thought about my day. It began by cheering on a recent client as they returned back to work. Later, I chatted with another client about their prenatal exam. I rounded out the day working a postpartum shift with a brand new family of four. I didn't do anything heroic today. But what I did do, was hold space for these families. I listened with an open heart and open ears and helped them feel seem and heard in a place where they did not otherwise. I am not changing the world, or even the maternal health world with big, valiant acts, but with smaller acts that I can only hope will carry a domino effect. I am making a difference in the lives I touch, and I am forever humbled by it.

Today, we'll talk about how doulas make a difference postpartum.

While a birth doula is there for you prenatally and during birth. A postpartum doula cares for you and your family after baby is born. They are a guardian of your fourth trimester and help you transition into your new family makeup.

This can look like many things; from helping with light housekeeping, providing guidance on newborn care, or even caring for baby while you get some much-needed sleep. A postpartum doula helps with your individual needs to ensure a smooth postpartum period.

A doula helps you establish breastfeeding early on and is a source of both information and encouragement on your lactation journey.

Not only are doulas trained in basic lactation, they have a network of other lactation professionals in their arsenal to help you as well, if need be.
