The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic exam no later than age 7.
By age 7, an orthodontist can spot a problem with your childโ€™s teeth before it becomes a bigger issue!
If your child hasnโ€™t been seen for their first orthodontic appointment, give our office a call and we would love to help you schedule that. Remember - an initial examination at Ladner & Jain Orthodontics is complimentary!

Many dentists recommend discouraging pacifier use after the age of three. However, studies by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry show that pacifier use increase the risk of ear infections & bite issues starting at 12-18 months of age.
Prolonged pacifier use can cause open bites (the misalignment of teeth causing them to angle outward), cross bites (when the upper teeth fit behind or inside the lower teeth) and changes to the roof of the mou.th (it can cause narrowing or general misshaping of the roof of the mouth)
Speech impediments: Pacifiers can cause mouth misalignments, which may affect speech.
Eating problems: Misalignment can cause problems eating.

Schedule routine check-ups. If itโ€™s been more than six months since your child has seen a dentist, schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Clean your babyโ€™s gums daily. Until those teeth come in gently wipe a damp washcloth over the gums to clear away harmful bacteria after each feeding.
Start brushing with the first tooth. Begin brushing your babyโ€™s teeth with an infant toothbrush when you see their first tooth coming in. Use water and a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
Brush twice each day for two minutes. Children ages 2-6 should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Always supervise kids younger than six years old while brushing, as they are more likely to swallow toothpaste.
Begin flossing. Once your childโ€™s teeth touch, you can start flossing in between them.
Snack healthy! Fruit juice, sports drinks, fruit snacks, and sticky candies all pose serious threats to your childโ€™s teeth. Give kids calcium-rich snacks like cheese or low-sugar yogurt. If you have to resort to candy โ€“ a chocolate bar is preferable to gummy or sticky sweets that can get lodged in between the teeth, even after brushing.
Keep them hydrated! Avoid sugary drinks and stick to good old-fashioned water. Water helps to rinse away any sugar or particles that can lead to cavities. Many municipal water sources also contain fluoride as an efficient way to prevent tooth decay.
Replace your childโ€™s toothbrush every three to four months.
