Dear Parents:

The US Department of Education has proposed to eliminate the requirement that parents of children with disabilities sign consent to have a school bill Medicaid for school-based services such as speech, physical or occupational therapy, nursing services, etc. This requirement is part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which also says that children cannot lose any benefits as a result of their parents signing consent for schools to bill Medicaid for school-based services. We have heard from some parents that their child’s outpatient services (services at home, in the community, or at a provider’s office), were reduced, or eliminated, when they signed consent for the school to bill Medicaid for services.

The Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE) did a survey of their members. Their members told them that this was not happening. Now we need to hear from YOU! If you were asked by your school or district to sign consent to bill Medicaid for outpatient services (services delivered to your child in school), please answer the brief survey below.

✨ I’m back! ✨

The 23/24 school year was an amazing but busy one for me, as I got my bearings running my own company, serving a direct contract for a school district in TN, and juggling mom life while pregnant with my third baby.

We welcomed our little girl in May and have had a great, slow summer adjusting to life with three kids. School starts back up here in middle TN in 2 weeks, and I’m preparing to start a new contract at the end of August with a district in NH that I know well and love!

My company is looking to add additional school contracts in either TN or NH. If you know of a district with an SLP vacancy, I would love to connect with them! Please feel free to send me their contact information or provide mine to them 💛

🌼 Do you know why reading to your child is so important? Reading teaches children many, many important things. One thing we can truly quantify is the number of words a child will be exposed to by age 5 by reading to them daily.

🌼 If reading books is not part of your child’s bedtime routine, consider adding it in. The books don’t have to be lengthy, and repeating the same books is great! You will never regret exposing your children to more words, improving their expressive and receptive vocabularies and literacy skills.

🌼 If you haven’t signed up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library yet, you can receive a free book every month until your child’s 5th birthday!

🌼 Love love love core vocabulary! It is often used with AAC users, but the approach is rooted in the idea of teaching “the most bang for your buck” kinds of words, making it appropriate for emergent communicators and those with significant expressive language delays.

🌼 Notice there are no nouns on the list of examples — because, often times, nouns don’t extend across multiple contexts like other word types do. When a child is very limited in the number of words they can use expressively, it makes the most sense to initially teach words that can be used across many different situations.

🌼 The Center for AAC and Autism has a 96-page document that includes common core vocabulary words and activity ideas for teaching these words. Check it out on their website! ✨

✨In my neurodiversity affirming era✨

🌼 There is so much to unlearn from years of schooling and professional experience that taught me and tons of other SLPs that being autistic is problematic, something to be fixed. That we should be teaching autistic individuals to act and appear neurotypical like their peers.

🌼 This is so so wrong!! Think of the damage we are doing by telling individuals they aren’t good enough the way they are and that they must change or hide who they are to please others.

🌼 I am committed to learning everything I can to be the best neurodiversity affirming SLP I can possibly be. Will you join me?
