🐾 Animal Walks: Why OTs Love Them!
Animal walks are a fun and playful way to build important developmental skills. In pediatric therapy, we often use these movements because kids are more engaged when activities feel like a game!
Here are some of the key skills animal walks help develop:
🦅 Vestibular System
Animal walks involve head movement, changes in position, and balance challenges that help strengthen the body’s balance system.
🐒 Stability & Strength
Many animal walks require children to support their body weight through their arms and legs, building core and shoulder strength.
🦅 Range of Motion (ROM)
Different animal movements encourage children to stretch and move their joints through a variety of positions.
🦋 Gross Motor Skills
These activities support whole-body movements such as crawling, jumping, and coordinated stepping.
🐎 Coordination
Kids learn how to move different body parts together smoothly and efficiently.
🐢 Bilateral Coordination
Animal walks help children use both sides of their body together (right and left), which is important for many everyday tasks.
🐻 Crossing Midline
Movements like bear crawls encourage the body to reach across the middle of the body, supporting brain-body communication.
🐍 Proprioception
Weight-bearing movements provide deep pressure input that helps children understand where their body is in space.
🐘 Motor Planning
Kids practice figuring out how to move their bodies in new ways, building problem-solving and movement planning skills.
✨ Try this at home:
Turn it into a game! Ask your child to move like different animals across the room:
• Bear crawl
• Frog jumps
• Crab walk
• Snake slither
• Elephant stomps
Not only is it fun — it’s powerful for development!
