Jack Erickson

Age 85, John L. “Jack” Erickson left this earth for his Eternal Home on May 10, 2026.

Jack was born on December 20, 1940, in Litchfield, Minnesota, to the late John R. and Nellie Erickson. He was a graduate of Dassel High, David Lipscomb College, and Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned a master’s degree in education.

His Bachelor’s degree in Bible from Lipscomb served him well as he spent many years regularly serving as the minister for the beloved Beech Grove Church of Christ, in Jackson County, TN and other churches throughout the region. Jack retired from teaching in Sumner County, TN - a well known and loved “out of the box” teacher of mostly 3rd grade.

A man of infinite talents, Jack spent his life in service to others. He built energy-efficient homes in the 70s before it was trendy. His passions for photography, flying, beekeeping, and making furniture all provided outlets for his service and connection to others. Jack spent his retirement years working alongside Lisa, attending garden shows throughout the country, and selling his beautiful furniture creations. Jack and Lisa enjoyed finding quaint coffee shops wherever they traveled.

Jack was a man of quiet faith, leading by example, and leaving behind a legacy of faith, creativity, hard work, and quiet strength. Jack is best remembered as the embodiment of 1 Thessalonians 4:11: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your hands.”

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his brothers Robin and Butch, sister DeeDee, and his father-at-heart Bertram C. Shearer.

Jack is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Lisa; children, Michelle (Mark) Hackney, David (Lori) Erickson, Simon (Carol) Lynn, Phillip (Christine) Lynn, and John Lynn; grandchildren, Emma and Griffin Erickson, and Holland and Hazel Lynn. He is also survived by his brother Rick (Christine) Erickson; sister, Malissa (Mike) Sheppard; and a host of extended family.

The family will honor Jack’s memory with a graveside service at Sumner Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 3:00 PM.

Gene Colson Sanborn

Gene Colson Sanborn, age 88, will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather whose life was defined by service, family, and a deep appreciation of the outdoors.

Gene was born in Clearwater, Florida, on November 2, 1937, to the late Harry Stafford Sanborn and Isabel Agnes Bacon Sanborn. Of their four children, he was the last survivor. He departed on Friday, May 8, 2026, and resided in Portland, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sharon Elizabeth McMullen Sanborn, with whom he shared 58 cherished years. He is survived by his children: Lisa Carter; Derek Sanborn and his wife Janeane; and Amy Wirsching and her husband, Michael. His legacy continues through his six grandchildren, Sarah Sanborn, Emma Sanborn, Matthew Sanborn, Annie Sanborn, Oliver Wirsching, and Ansel Wirsching; and two great-grandchildren ; all who brought him immense pride and happiness. He also leaves behind a special companion, Ruby Reed, whose love and presence meant a great deal to him.

Gene was a professed follower of Jesus Christ and he spent most of his life attending and serving the Methodist church. His belief in Jesus as his savior was a driving force in his attitude toward life and how he treated those around him.

A retired Major in the United States Air Force, he served his country with honor and dedication for 30 years. Beyond his military career, he volunteered many hours at his children's schools, and retired for a second time from the State of Florida. He found great joy in the outdoors-- whether fishing, tending to his garden, working with his hands, or building anything that sparked his curiosity. He never met a person he did not want to chat with and was generous with his time, love, and gifts. He leaves those he loved with many lasting memories.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his strength, kindness, and unwavering love for his family.

A graveside service with military burial honors provided by the United States Air Force will take place at Sumner Memorial Gardens on Saturday, May 23, at 12pm noon.

Helen Starks Chambers

Helen Starks Chambers was born on June 30, 1929, in South Tunnel, Tennessee, and entered into the presence of her Maker on May 3, 2026, at the age of 96. In her passing, heaven gained a fearless woman and an even kinder soul with a heart overflowing with love. Known as “Mother” to her children and “Grandmother” to her grandchildren, she knew no enemies, was the brightest light in every room, and was never without her lipstick and perfectly polished nails.

A lifelong resident of Gallatin, Helen was quick to remind others that she was “older than all the roads in town” and didn’t mind that some had become one-way streets—she had driven them the other direction for years and wasn’t about to stop until someone took her keys away. She was the third of four children born to Ms. Ruby Perry. Energetic, playful, and responsible from an early age, Helen carried these traits with her throughout her life.

After graduating from Gallatin High School, Helen went to work for Genesco Inc., where she was crowned “Miss Genesco.” She married in 1950 and went on to rear three children: Sherran, Danny, and Lisa. She later joined the Castner Knott Company, where she became a celebrated sales champion and beloved employee. While she did not hold a doctorate degree, she possessed the equivalent in productivity, resilience, and determination. There was nothing Helen could not do. If told something was impossible, her fearless will ensured she proved otherwise.

From running a 10K without any training or previous running experience to becoming the top salesperson at Gallatin Chrysler year after year, Helen achieved what many believed and voiced could not be done—especially for a woman of her time. She never backed down from any obstacle and she triumphed over each skeptic with dignity, grace, and, of course, while in hosiery.

After completing her first race, Helen became an avid runner, earning numerous medals and trophies. She competed in races across Tennessee, from 5Ks to marathons, with her final race at the remarkable age of 90. For many years, she remained active at the Gallatin Civic Center, where she walked miles each day—paired, naturally, with bottomless coffee.

Helen was deeply committed to serving her community. She gave her time to support presidential campaigns, volunteered with Meals on Wheels, visited the sick and homebound, and faithfully served her church wherever needed. A devoted Christian, Helen eagerly shared her faith and was unwavering in her love for Jesus. She was a founding member of South Water Church of Christ in 1951 (now Hartsville Pike Church of Christ in Gallatin) and never missed an opportunity to invite others to worship. Her outgoing personality, servant’s heart, and joyful spirit made her deeply loved throughout Gallatin and Sumner County.

Above all, Helen’s greatest joy was her family. She never hesitated to tell her children and grandchildren how much she loved and cherished them or how proud she was of each one. She delighted in being a grandmother, showering her grandchildren with unconditional love, support, and hugs. Nowhere was this more evident than at Christmastime. Helen worked tirelessly to create wonder and joy for her family—from surprise visits by “Santy Claus” to mountains of wrapped presents and off-key caroling in festive ugly sweaters. She made every Christmas remarkably special and truly unforgettable.

In her later years, Helen resided at Brookdale Gallatin, where she continued to live with the same zest for life, positivity, and loving spirit. She was treasured by staff and residents alike, a familiar and welcome presence as she made her daily rounds visiting others. True to her nature, she never met a stranger, and that remained so until she entered heaven. The love and care she extended to others will be deeply missed by all who knew her, especially her family, who she loved so deeply.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruby Perry of Westmoreland; her sisters, Joanne Law and Dorothy Womack; and her brother, R.H. Starks.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Sherran and Chuck Allen, Danny and Lisa Chambers, and Lisa and Jack Erickson; eight grandchildren: Brent Allen (Julie), Matt Allen (Brenda), Amy Allen Ice (Robbie), Simon Lynn (Carol), Phillip Lynn (Christine), John Lynn, Allie Chambers Hopkins (Jacob), and Dylan Chambers (Grace); and eleven great-grandchildren: Maura, Tristan, Bennett, and Judah Allen; Ava, Myla, and Harper Garrison; Holland and Hazel Lynn; and Eli and Wyatt Chambers; along with several cherished nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be hosted by her children on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at noon.

Obituary for Julia Tyree Bate MacFarland

With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of beloved family matriarch Julia Tyree Bate MacFarland. Julia Tyree died April 29, 2026, at age 102 in her home, embraced and surrounded by members of her immediate family and caregivers.

Born January 7, 1924, at home in Castalian Springs, on the farm where her ancestors had settled well over two hundred years ago, she was the daughter and only child of Hortense Onio Carter of Lafayette, TN and William Tyree Bate of Castalian Springs, TN.

Julia Tyree”s early schooling was by private tutor until age nine, when she began attending Castalian Springs School as a fourth grader, graduating with her classmates in eighth grade, then entering and finishing at Gallatin Senior High as her class Valedictorian. She earned her A. A. degree at Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri and was elected to Phi Theta Kappa Senior Honor Society. Following Stephens, she entered Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN and earned her B. A. degrees in English and Psychology graduating Magna Cum Laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society as well as many other clubs. It was at Vanderbilt that she first met Alfred MacFarland, who was serving in the Tennessee General Assembly as Senator from Wilson County, the same seat his father held 32 years prior. Alfred very charmingly offered to show Julia and her suite mates, (who were investigating state government for an assignment at Vandy) the Senate Chambers and legislature. As an additional courtesy, he offered to deliver the young ladies back to campus to save them a bus ride from downtown back to their classes. An extended courtship evolved which eventually ended in marriage on October 5, 1952 and lasted for the next 54 years.

Being the wife of a gregarious, charismatic politician and attorney involved hosting many social gatherings, a task in which she excelled. Many times she hosted parties in threes-one for associates and friends of Alfred’s, followed the next evening by a second party for their mutual friends and neighbors, and finally gathering the third night with family. Entertaining was her great joy and she oversaw every detail from designing beautiful floral decorations, creating sumptuous dinners and inventing fun party games to entertain. She loved to travel and explore new locales, had a love for history and historical residences and often volunteered to help when there was an opportunity to fundraise and preserve local buildings. She stayed actively engaged in political elections and worked at the polls every election until retiring in her 80’s.

In the mid-seventies, Julia and Alfred resided in Washington, D.C. for 6 years when Alfred was appointed a Commissioner on the Interstate Commerce Commission, and they were there to celebrate the country’s Bicentennial. She hosted a ‘Thanksgiving Dinner Internationale', where friends from Italy, Israel, Mexico, Canada, England and various cities across the states brought a favorite typical dish. She absolutely relished her time in the always bustling and event filled capital city, but ultimately the love of homeplace called, and they settled back in Tennessee where she enjoyed a peaceful life doting on family, and became enthusiastically involved in her beloved church, First Presbyterian of Gallatin. Here she again was able to flex her creative entertaining skills and spent many happy hours planning events with her Presbyterian Women’s Circle 3 group, and separately hosting her friends, family and neighbors for workshops, group luncheons and travel outings several times a year.

Julia Tyree was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Commissioner Alfred Towson MacFarland, and beloved son, Alfred Towson MacFarland, II.

She is survived by her daughter, Tyree Bate MacFarland, Nashville, TN, son, Carter Crowe MacFarland (Pamela), Lenoir City, TN; grandchildren: Julia Elizabeth MacFarland Eadler (Andrew) (Hartsville, TN), John Towson MacFarland (Katie) (Fountain Run, KY), Carter Patrick MacFarland (Elena) (Baton Rouge, LA), Darcy Towson MacFarland (Marseille, France), and Tess Kinnear MacFarland (Mandeville, LA); as well as three great-grandchildren, Keenan and Rayle MacFarland and Olivia Eadler. Julia loved life and did all she could to live fully for her 102 plus years on earth. It can be said that her thirst for living was integral to her soul, and her family remains grateful to be there with her through part of it. We also wish to express how grateful we have been for the gentle care given by so many at Highpoint Hospice, particularly Larry Smith, Holly Gunter and Melanie Capps, nighttime caregiver Vonnie Allison, and her decades-long caregiver and companion Anglin Wright.

There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial Service Friday, May 29, 2026, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church located at 167 W Main Street, in Gallatin with reception immediately following. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, 167 W. Main Street, Gallatin, TN 37066 or Historic Castalian Springs, 200 Cragfont Rd., Castalian Springs, TN 37031 (or via the Historic Castalian Springs website).
