Kids can absolutely show empathy, especially when another child is upset.
But when adults are frustrated or overwhelmed, it can feel different to them… and they may assume, “Did I do something wrong?”
A helpful shift: gently let them know what’s really going on. “This isn’t about you, I’m just feeling stressed right now.”
That simple reassurance can ease their worries, while also modeling healthy emotional expression.
It builds trust, connection, and shows them that feelings can be talked about safely. 💙
