Avoidance feels good in the moment.
You don’t open the email.
You don’t make the call.
You don’t have the conversation.
You distract yourself instead.
And for a little while… the anxiety goes down.
But what most people don’t realize is this:
Avoidance teaches your brain that the situation was dangerous….even when it wasn’t.
So next time?
The anxiety comes back stronger.
Avoidance isn’t laziness.
It’s not weakness.
It’s a coping strategy your nervous system learned to protect you.
The problem is… it keeps you stuck.
Therapy helps you gently break that cycle, by building emotional regulation skills, increasing tolerance for discomfort, and helping your brain learn:
“I can handle this.”
Growth doesn’t come from avoiding discomfort.
It comes from safely facing it, one step at a time.
If you’re ready to interrupt the cycle, we’re here to help.
