As posts about equine herpes fill my page once again, I figured I would give my insight. EHV and EHM are not new diseases. However, cases of EHV do appear to be rearing it’s ugly head more frequently. With that comes fear and blame, BUT hopefully we will circle back around to constructive change!
I have always thought that being informed/educated is our best weapon in life—it holds true for most things, including this!

Since we are all going to be close to home for the next few weeks, enjoying the fantastic weather (maybe even some light rain), and riding our horses…. I’ll attempt to share a few things to make us all ‘more educated’. 😂

Attached is a horse report issued many moons ago (only 15 years) when I was in school. It was my final clinical year and I still remember traveling with Dr Pusterla to Golden Gate Fields and nasal swabbing MANY unruly thoroughbreds. Back then we thought we had to get ALL THE WAY BACK into the nasal pharynx! Our nasal swabs were either 24 or 36 inches (I can’t quite recall). What I do recall is they were LONG and it was quite a nightmare. Since then, we have learned a good swab with a 6 inch culturette will do—still often NOT that easy. 😂

Breeding season is well underway! Lots of confirmed pregnancies. Bought a new ultrasound machine and played with it on my own mare this weekend: here is a 9.5 day that has grown to 12 day. My mare Peek a Boo in foal to Golden West! So excited. Melissa Rose Mulchahey

No discrimination here... large or small... we love them all. Red one is 18 hands...the black one, we we will just say she makes it well over 18 inches!

Little colic treatment, distal limb perfusion... oh and the big one. Nothing wrong with him, he just melts in the rain so came in to stay dry.
