For the last two weeks I have had to navigate the healthcare system as a patient. 😟

I am VERY thankful that I know how to advocate for myself.
I shudder to think about what could have happened if I did not.

As physicians, we know how the healthcare system works. We know how to interpret results and explain them in plain terms. We know how to get the most out of medical appointments, how to communicate clearly with medical professionals, and how to prepare for the next steps.

Our friends and family members ask us these questions when they are confused.

The best part of leading a workshop is seeing the participants engage and knowing that they will take the skills and tools with them!

I had the honor of delivering my NEW workshop: “The Doctor Will SEE You Now: A Prescription for Restoring Humanity in Healthcare” at the 340B Coalition Summer Conference ‘25. Special thanks to Kalika Shah and the 340B Health team for the invitation.

We opened with an interactive presentation that utilized data and storytelling to build the case for an empathy deficit in healthcare.

Then we had 45 minutes of sharing, deep listening and role play centered around The 90 Second Encounter™️, a concept I introduced in my 2019 TEDx talk that encourages healthcare providers to spend the first 90 seconds of all patient encounters connecting with the human on the other side of the stethoscope.

The icing on the cake?
✅ This works for ALL healthcare workers/providers!
✅ The process is reciprocal! Patients and care partners can do it too!

The results of restoring humanity?
✔️A deeper sense of connection for patients, care partners and healthcare workers/providers
✔️ Increased treatment adherence
✔️Reduced burnout/moral injury
✔️Improved health outcomes
✔️Lower healthcare costs

“It’s the part of my job I love the most but I don’t have time to do it.”

AMKD Awareness Day is coming up on April 29!

Did you know that your genes can influence your kidney health? Black Americans are more likely to develop End Stage Kidney Disease/kidney failure. Often it is attributed to their diabetes or high blood pressure. In addition to these chronic conditions, Black Americans are more likely to have APOL1 gene mutations that increase the risk of developing APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD), a rapidly progressive form of kidney disease that can occur at a young age. Information and awareness is key.
