Diabetes and Dental Care

When diagnosed with diabetes, a person should seek care with a trained and knowledgeable geriatric dentist because the disease can cause drastic changes in the mouth in a short period of time. Poor blood glucose control can result in periodontal disease which left untreated can lead to loss bone around the teeth. Diabetes is also known to cause dry mouth and a fungal infection called thrush. However, with regular blood glucose testing, proper brushing, flossing and diligent dental check-ups, a diabetic can maintain healthy teeth and gums.

At Gentle Dental LI, we’re committed to caring for ageless smiles by strengthening the oral health of those 55 and older, as well as providing compassionate and accessible dental care for their aging parents. Our goal with each and every patient is to develop a highly comprehensive, yet personalized oral health program which can reduce dental cavities and infections, as well as periodontal diseases and oral cancer.

Our supervising dentist, Dr. Terry Grant, has worked with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the United States Surgeon General. In addition, he is a Diplomat in Geriatric Dentistry and has more than twenty-five years of experience providing geriatric and cosmetic dental services. Dr. Grant has been awarded honors from the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry and the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. In addition, he received the Congressional Record Achievement Award from the 109th United States Congress.

Why our practice is special

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 2012 and 2050, the United States will experience considerable growth in its older generations. In 2050, the population of those aged 65 and over is projected to be 83.7 million, almost twice what it was in 2012.

Older people need strong teeth and healthy gums in order to remain active, enjoy food, and support their speech. However, many are prone to more oral health problems, including:
Recessed gums, which expose the roots of the teeth leading to decay and periodontal infection.
Medications that cause side effects such as dry mouth, soft tissue changes, taste changes and gingival overgrowth.
Compromised immune status.
Diminished salivary flow.
Worsening memory and/or depression, which can result in a lack of daily dental hygiene.
The potential for irritation, increased bone loss and infections for denture wearers.

Most general dentists don’t understand how aging and diseases impact teeth. And that can make treatment increasingly frustrating and difficult for patients. At Gentle Dental, our staff is specifically trained in treating those aged 55 and older, including their elderly parents. We understand the complexity of aging, both physically and mentally. During the initial exam, we will evaluate your dental needs, medical history and current medications, and provide a complete oral assessment. We will then recommend the best clinical plan for preventative and restorative care, including daily oral care and good nutrition. Trust the dental specialists at Gentle Dental LI to care for your ageless smile. Call for an appointment today.
