Meet Metro: Occupational Therapy Month Edition!!

Today we’re excited to introduce Kristen Catania, a licensed and registered Occupational Therapist with four years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. She specializes in orthopedic and upper extremity care and regularly fabricates custom orthotics to support her patients’ recovery.

Kristen treats a wide range of conditions including post-surgical cases, traumatic injuries, neurological diagnoses, and pediatric patients. She is passionate about evidence-based practice, functional restoration, and building strong therapeutic relationships that empower patients to regain independence and confidence in their daily lives.

Outside of work, Kristen enjoys staying active through strength training, Pilates, and tennis. She also loves traveling, exploring new places, and spending quality time with friends and family.

Fun facts: Kristen can wakeboard and was the captain of her high school lacrosse team, where she developed her leadership skills and appreciation for teamwork.

We’re grateful to have Kristen as part of the Metro team and appreciate the dedication and care she brings to her patients every day.

Hip pain or groin stiffness? Try this simple dynamic stretch to get things moving again.

This dynamic groin stretch helps improve mobility, reduce stiffness, and loosen tight muscles around the hips. Keep your hands on your hips and gently swing your leg side to side, holding for 1–2 seconds each rep.

Aim for 2 sets of 10 repetitions, about 2–3 times per day.

If you need extra support, hold onto a chair or any stable surface while performing the movement.

Small, consistent movement like this can go a long way in improving your hip mobility and reducing discomfort.

Noticing that your balance isn’t what it used to be? Try these simple exercises at home to help improve stability and confidence while standing.

Before starting, make sure you are standing in front of something sturdy, like a kitchen counter, so you have support if needed. Begin by standing with your feet close together and hover your hands over the surface while maintaining your balance. If that becomes easier, progress to a tandem stance (toe-to-heel) position. For an added challenge, try a single-leg stance while keeping your hands ready to grab support if necessary. Hold each position for up to 30 seconds, progressing to 1 minute as your balance improves. Aim to perform these exercises twice a day.

Dealing with knee arthritis or ongoing knee pain? This simple exercise can help strengthen the muscles that support your knee and improve stability.

Start by lying on your side on a firm surface like the floor or a yoga mat. Keep your leg in line with your body, then slightly bring your knee and ankle backwards. From there, lift your leg while squeezing your glute, making sure your leg stays behind you the entire time. Avoid letting your leg drift forward, as this is a common compensation. Perform 2 sets of 10 reps on each side, focusing on controlled movement and proper form. Aim to do this exercise 3–4 times per week.

Knee stiffness slowing you down? This simple wall exercise can help improve your mobility and reduce discomfort.

All you need is a towel and a wall. Position yourself close to the wall and place your affected leg up against it with the towel under your foot. Slowly slide your foot down the wall until you feel a gentle stretch or slight discomfort, then hold for 5 seconds. Slide your foot back up, press through your heel, and gently try to straighten your knee—holding again for 5 seconds. Continue this movement for about 5 minutes, aiming to do it daily for a month to see the best results.

If you’d like to improve your confidence going down stairs and strengthen your knees and ankles, try this simple step-down exercise at home.

Before starting, make sure you have something stable to hold on to, such as a fixed handrail or an assistive device for support.

Step down slowly and with control, making sure the middle of your knee stays aligned over the second toe of the bending leg. Then return back up to the starting position.

Perform 20 repetitions on one side, then switch to the other side for 20 repetitions. Move slowly and focus on control. Try doing this exercise once a day to help improve strength, balance, and stair confidence.

Our Story

We want to help build a better YOU! Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy, established in 1982 by Sherrie Glasser, M.S. P.T, is Long Island’s oldest family owned and operated Physical Therapy practice. Metro PT has heated salter water pools, full fitness centers, and certified manual therapists. Our therapists spend 60+ minutes with every single patient and our patient outcomes are high because of how experienced our therapists are. We do not overbook appointments with other patients and do not use assistants for treatments.

We also offer affordable wellness programs if and when insurance exhausts. Our classes include Mat Pilates, Tai Chi, Yoga, Silver Sneakers, and Dance for Parkinson's. We also offer personal training and gym memberships. Our state-of-the-art fitness centers allow patients to stay "in therapy" at a lower price than most copays.
