KHCA NAMES GVRV’S ACKER AS DIETARY MANAGER OF THE YEAR

Garden Valley Retirement Village has announced that Mary Acker, CDM, has been named the 2025 Dietary Manager of the Year by the Kansas Health Care Association (KHCA). This honor celebrates Acker’s dedication to residents, families, and staff over her 41 years and 10 months of service.
Since joining Garden Valley in 1983, the same year Microsoft Word debuted, and the Internet was born, Acker has been a cornerstone of the GVRV community.
She is best known for her ability to pair professional culinary skill with personal care, serving everything from traditional German meals and Hawaiian luaus to community cookouts, birthday celebrations, and holiday feasts.
“Mary not only creates delicious meals,” shared colleague Ruby Buller, “she demonstrates her outstanding abilities as a chef and baker in bread, cookies, cakes, desserts, and hors d’oeuvres. She is hardworking, dedicated, and loyal to her residents and team. Mary truly displays her talents daily.”
More than her skill in the kitchen, Acker is admired for her heart. She consistently incorporated residents’ preferences into menus, showing compassion and concern for their health and well-being. Even during times of staffing challenges, She worked multiple shifts, always keeping residents at the center of her focus.
