How do neuropsychological evaluations work at Psychological Diagnostic Evaluations of New York?

📈 A comprehensive evaluation typically requires 6 to 8 hours of in-person testing.

➡️ For children: we usually break the testing into several 2-hour appointments to make it more manageable.

➡️ For teenagers or adults: sessions may be longer to reduce the number of appointments needed.

We will work with you to determine the best session length and frequency for you or your child.

The entire evaluation process, from the first appointment to the feedback session with the doctor, typically takes about 8 weeks. After the feedback session, you will receive a comprehensive written report.

If you’d like to know more about this process or our other services, DM us or call 516-240-8212. We’re happy to answer all of your questions.

If you have concerns about your kindergartener or first grader and teachers are saying they’ll catch up, please trust your gut as a parent. Reach out to us and we can help you decide when is the right time for an evaluation.

It takes four times longer to intervene in 4th grade than in 1st grade.
The longer we wait to identify a child that struggles to read, the more intervention, time, money and remediation is needed, not to mention the impact that waiting may have on self esteem and mental health.
Don’t wait. Close the gap.

“How is a private evaluation different from one my child received at school?”

We’re glad you asked!

While they can be helpful, evaluations conducted by schools are often more limited in scope.

School evaluations:
✖️ Are designed to determine if a child qualifies for special education services, but not necessarily to provide a specific diagnosis or comprehensive understanding of their unique learning profile.
✖️ Rarely include detailed, data-driven recommendations on how to improve areas of weakness.

Our private evaluations are different because we focus on three key things:
✔️ Diagnosis: Our evaluations aim to provide a clear diagnosis based on objective data.
✔️ Understanding: We help you understand why you or your child may be struggling, going beyond just identifying a problem.
✔️ Recommendations: We believe a good evaluation is pointless without a clear path forward. We provide tailored, research-backed recommendations to help improve outcomes at school and at home.

At Psychological Diagnostic Evaluations of New York, we pride ourselves on our independence and the integrity of our data-driven work.

Winter break is here for many NY public school students, and while you might worry that your child could fall behind . . . try to remember:

➡️ It’s important for kids with learning differences to “just be kids” too.

Whether that looks like sleeping in, building a fort in the living room, or playing outside, rest is good for those growing brains.

This break isn’t about falling behind; it’s about slowing down. Unstructured time helps kids regulate, imagine, and reconnect with themselves and you.
