At CommonSpirit Health, we prioritize safety for our patients and for our caregivers. On this Friday, we join the American Hospital Association and stand in solidarity with our colleagues across our hospitals and clinics – and the healthcare industry – to raise awareness about the increased risk of violence against healthcare workers in recent years.

Make no mistake: Violence and aggression have no place at our care sites. Through increased training, risk evaluation, emotional support for our teams and more, we are dedicated to violence prevention. Every patient deserves to be treated with compassion, and every health care worker deserves to be treated with respect.

We are listening, we are acting, and we are committed to a culture of safety.

Last week, we celebrated the retirement of Dr. Zeferino Arroyo. Dr. Arroyo leaves CommonSpirit Health a legacy of kindness, compassion, and dedication to his patients, the community, and the practice of medicine. Dr. Arroyo joined the surgical staff at St. Catherine Hospital in 1980, performing a broad scope of general surgical practice. He served as Chief Surgery at St. Catherine, President of the Medical staff, and was a board member of the Hospital Board. All the while, Dr. Arroyo taught students and residents at the University of Kansas and provided lectures to surgical technicians and EMTs in the care of trauma.

On behalf of the hospital and community, we want to express our gratitude for his decades of service and unwavering commitment to healthcare.
