A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).

Can’t believe we are celebrating a year of life for this little one this weekend!

Our Experience with Janalyn, Our Amazing Doula!!

Janalyn was an absolute godsend throughout our journey of welcoming our daughter, Brielle into the world. From the moment we started working with her, she brought a sense of calm, confidence, and compassion that made all the difference for my husband and I.

Before the birth, Janalyn took the time to sit with us for several sessions, walking us through what to expect in the final weeks of pregnancy and during labor. She explained everything so clearly, ensuring we understood our options while truly listening to what we wanted for our birth experience. What I appreciated most at this stage was how she included my husband in every step, making him feel just as involved and comfortable with the process as I did. Her wealth of knowledge empowered us to make informed decisions, and she was always just a call away whenever I needed to discuss anything that came up during my pregnancy. Her guidance helped us feel prepared and supported, no matter the situation.

During birth, Janalyn was a steady presence. My labor didn’t go as planned—as so many women can relate to—but Janalyn was right there, helping us navigate decisions with clarity and care.

After Brielle arrived, Janalyn’s support continued to shine. She provided a safe, nurturing space for me to process my feelings about the birth, which was incredibly healing. She also offered invaluable guidance as we navigated Brielle’s feedings, supporting us through both breastfeeding and bottle-feeding with patience and expertise. Janalyn’s wealth of knowledge on newborn care was a lifeline during those early, overwhelming days.

Beyond her expertise, Janalyn’s kindness and compassion truly set her apart. She has a way of making you feel seen, heard, and cared for in every moment. We’re so grateful for the role she played in our journey and can’t recommend her highly enough to any expecting parents!

Pure Barre has been a little sweeter this month since it was gifted by this amazing family. It always surprises me when families give me a gift for supporting them. They have already given me the greatest gift by inviting me into their sacred space. This gift said more than thank you- it said I pay attention to the things that are important to you. Thank you Emily and Eli for the years of amazing times from lactation support to two birth experiences and all the times we run into each other around town.

It is always so special to be invited into someone’s birth space. It is a true honor to be asked repeatedly to join someone’s birth space. I’ve had the privilege of supporting this beautiful family with all three of their children. Yesterday marked our last official doula visit with their third and last child. Thankfully relationships never end and Jillian’s mark will always be on Moments to Breathe since she created the logo. Thank you Jillian and Chris for letting me be a part of your family’s story.

It’s extra special when you can provide doula services for family. “First off, huge huge thank you to Janalyn, for flying in from NY to take care of Archer while I (and Colin) were at the hospital. It was so comforting knowing he was in such good hands at just 2 weeks old. If you ever need a doula or have birth/baby questions, she is amazing, we are so lucky to have her as family 🥰 “

Yesterday was such a special lactation visit! I had the privilege of being the birth assistant at ’s home birth four years ago. I’ve thought of her occasionally over the years and even just six weeks ago had a several minute wonder of how she’s doing and reminiscing about her birth. On Thursday I received a text from a fellow care provider that he shared my information with one of his clients. Yesterday afternoon, we met again in the same bedroom to work on her daughter’s latch. It was so special to reminisce about her son’s birth, hear about her daughter’s birth and help her achieve a latch “that’s she had never felt” in her three experiences of nursing.
