When Your Nervous System Won’t Fully Switch Off
Do you find yourself on edge a lot, not able to fully relax and settle?

And when you’re already on edge, you’ll notice something important happens, even small things can feel like too much, and bigger life problems and stressors can push you over the edge.

This is because the way we interpret and hold our experiences directly affects the nervous system.

Research in neuroscience and stress physiology shows that when the brain is in a threat-focused state, it doesn’t just respond to stress, it starts to filter for it.

Meaning the more activated the system becomes, the more it looks for what could go wrong, which then reinforces the stress response itself.
It becomes a loop, perception shapes physiology, and physiology shapes perception.
When the nervous system stays activated, research shows the brain becomes more focused on threat detection, uncertainty, and problem-solving loops, while access to calm thinking, emotional balance, and clear decision-making decreases.

But this is the part that changes everything, hypnosis can help retrain and calm the nervous system and support the brain in forming new patterns, even when external conditions haven’t changed yet.

Neuroscience research on neuroplasticity shows your brain is constantly shaped by the emotional and mental states you return to most often.

When the nervous system is under chronic stress, the brain’s alarm system, the amygdala, can become overactive, keeping the body in a prolonged stress response.
Over time, that state can begin to feel like the “normal” background of life.

Hypnosis helps interrupt that pattern.

Research from institutions including Stanford, Harvard-affiliated studies, and the National Institutes of Health has shown hypnosis can support:

Stress, anxiety, and emotional fatigue have been higher than they’ve been in years, with overall life satisfaction declining in the U.S.

And often, we try to explain it through what’s outside of us … the job, the economy, our health, our weight … which can contribute.

But what I see again and again is something deeper.

Take one of my clients, Marie. She came to me wanting to lose weight and quit smoking.

But what she really wanted … was to feel alive again, to feel happy, and to be the director of her life again.

Yes, she lost weight. Yes, she quit smoking. Those are the natural outcomes.

But even better… she came back to life.

She started enjoying hobbies again.

She had energy.

She stopped wanting to hide away from life.

She healed relationships with family members.

She started to speak up for herself.

She began stepping back into the world with a sense of openness and possibility.

And that’s what this work really does.

Life has a way of piling on- stress, responsibilities, disappointments.

Hello, Beautiful Soul,

Have you ever been judged, criticized, or made to feel small, whether it was intentional or unintentional?

Science shows that our nervous system responds strongly to criticism.

The brain pays extra attention to what feels negative or threatening, which is why one critical comment can stay with us longer than many kind ones.

This negativity bias once helped humans stay alert to danger, but today it can cause us to replay hurtful words long after the moment has passed.

Even small interactions can raise stress hormones and leave us unsettled longer than we’d like.

A friend I helped bring in groceries for chided me for taking too many bags in at once, then shared what she felt was helpful advice about slowing down, no matter how rushed we might feel.

But for me, it didn’t feel precarious or irresponsible to carry more bags than she was comfortable with. At first, I felt defensive, but I took a deep breath and let her share. I understand her physical activity level is lower, so her advice made sense from her perspective.

People usually offer wisdom that fits their experience, biases, fears, comfort level, history, viewpoints, philosophy, beliefs, and mental states, whether or not it fits you is for you to decide.

A while back, a YouTube creator in a group I run gushed appreciation over some of my analytics, I felt so boosted by her perspective. That same day, my brother asked about my subscriber count and laughed at the number.

So I made a choice: to strengthen my confidence, I focused on the encouraging voice. Then I went within and did an inventory of all the successes and positives that have unfolded along the way.

Research shows that one of the best things we can do is notice what we are feeling without immediately reacting.

Naming it, taking a slower breath, and reminding ourselves, this is their perspective, not my truth, helps calm the brain and keeps us from handing over our peace.

We get to decide where we place our attention, but unless it’s a natural reaction, it takes conscious choice to adopt a perspective that blesses our life, encourages us forward, and helps us feel good about ourselves.

The good news is our brains and bodies can settle again.

Some of my favorite methods - self hypnosis to return to calm, and hypnosis meditations, to shift reactive patterns of taking others’ moods, judgments, or opinions personally.

The more you return to your own calm inner center, the easier it becomes to hear the wiser voice within, and give attention to the perspective that supports, steadies, guides, and uplifts you.

Hello, Beautiful Soul,

Do you wait for a birthday, holiday, or special occasion to feel loved, to create something special, or to give yourself permission to enjoy life? Can you have a special day visiting your mom in a nursing home, shopping for groceries, at your job?

Today is my birthday, and I’m doing my best to make it a joyful day.

So far this morning I treated myself to yoga at the local gym, explored a new spot along the river and took time to take pictures of spring flowers and interesting rock formations, then I took time to make my favorite lentil dish, healthy and so yummy. But best of all, I savored and appreciated all the moments.

But I don’t want adventure, playfulness, joy, or self-care to belong only to birthdays.

I want to show up for myself every day-holidays, work days, cleaning days, tax days ...

Research in Positive Psychology shows that people are happier when they create moments of meaning in ordinary days instead of depending too much on outside events, other people’s attention, or life going a certain way.

It’s interesting to me how much meaning we can place on one day. We often ask, What are you doing for your birthday? As if one day has to carry extra weight, prove something, or measure how loved or fulfilled we are.

Last weekend I worked on my taxes. In the past I often had a bad attitude about it, but I made a conscious choice to make the best of the day.

I listened to an audiobook while I crunched numbers, took yoga stretch breaks, went for a long hike, and any time a bad attitude started to creep in, I reminded myself: feeling sorry for yourself doesn’t help. Look for thoughts that keep you uplifted.

I was delighted at how much I enjoyed my day.

Since I work from home and live in a beautiful place, I try to take advantage of the resources and freedoms I have during my work week.

I might take what I call mini vacations. I might take a few hours to go exploring a new part of the river, or to discover a new hiking trail. Or take advantage of a few hours in-between sessions to cook one of my favorite lentil dishes.

Small daily choices matter! A beautiful life is not built on a few special days. It is built in how you live your moments.

I invite you to explore how you can enjoy your journey of life even more.
