During the 50th anniversary of emancipation celebrations in 1915, Carter G. Woodson traveled from his home in Washington, D.C. to Chicago to participate. The University of Chicago was where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees, and he still maintained close ties to the campus.

The exhibits at the Coliseum, which showcased the achievements of African Americans since the abolition of slavery, inspired Woodson to do more to commemorate Black history and heritage. For the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which he helped found before he left Chicago (ASNLH). Exactly one year later, Woodson launched the Journal of Negro History by himself, in which he and other researchers highlighted the contributions of Black Americans to American history.
