“Super lice” have a genetic mutation that makes them resistant to the active ingredients in many over-the-counter lice treatments, like permethrin and pyrethrins. Super lice look identical to regular lice and cannot be identified by sight. Studies show that a large percentage of lice populations in most states, including California, are now super lice, making traditional treatments less effective.
