Today we celebrate Joy. 🎓

She has always had a way of putting a smile on everyone’s face. Her sense of humor, her warmth, and her love for music made her someone you never forget. Whether she was singing along to her favorite songs or playing the harmonica, she brought light into every room.

Everyone called her “Grandma,” not just because of her wisdom, but because of her heart. She was loved by everyone — and she loved right back.

Even with aphasia, she didn’t let anything stop her. She learned new ways to communicate, to express herself, and to advocate for her own needs. That takes strength. That takes determination. That takes courage.

Joy, your graduation isn’t just a milestone — it’s a testament to who you are. Resilient. Strong. Joyful in every sense of the word.

We are so proud of you. 💙

Distress Tolerance Skill: Anchor to the Present

When emotions spike, the goal is not to eliminate distress.
The goal is to stay regulated enough to get through the moment without making it worse.

Try this 3-Step Mindfulness Anchor:

1️⃣ Pause and Breathe
Slow your exhale. Make it longer than your inhale.
This signals safety to your nervous system.

2️⃣ Name 3 Things You Can See, 2 You Can Feel, 1 You Can Hear
This pulls your brain out of the threat response and back into the present.

3️⃣ Use a Grounding Statement
“I don’t have to solve this right now.”
“I can handle this moment.”

Distress comes in waves.
Mindfulness helps you ride the wave instead of reacting to it.

Practice when it’s mild — so it’s there when it’s hard.

We pulled back the curtain at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital Open House — and just like in The Wizard of Oz, the real magic isn’t smoke and mirrors… it’s the people behind it all.

Our nursing and therapy teams are the heart, brains, and courage that turn hard work into life-changing recovery for our patients every single day. Clinical excellence, teamwork, and compassion on full display.

Thank you to Numotion, Neosho County Community College, and Horizon Orthotic & Prosthetic Experience (H.O.P.E.) KC for your generous donations to make this event a success. And the team of Coordinated Therapy Solutions therapists who do these amazing things every day.
