South Gardner - Ward 5

South Gardner - Ward 5 Gardner which is dubbed the "Furniture Capital of New England" and "Chair City," Gardner is still home to a number of furniture outlets.

"Gardner, established in 1785, incorporated as a City in 1923, is home to 20,228 people (2010 Census). The City is governed by a Mayor and City Council. Gardner lies 30 miles northwest of Worcester and 60 miles northwest of Boston. Gardner is a dynamic City with so much to offer those who live in, work in, and visit our City. We have a proud history of furniture manufacturing. The City achieved in

ternational recognition as a major center for chair fabrication to the point that it became known as the "chair city of the world", a testament to this is a 20 foot tall chair sitting in front of the Helen Mae Sauter School. Gardner is home to numerous fine furniture outlets and is often called the "Furniture Capital of New England". Manufacturing is still a significant part of our local economy, but now it is diversified rather than concentrated in chair and furniture manufacturing. Gardner is also proud to say that within her 23 square miles one can find Mount Wachusett Community College, Heywood Hospital, many unique shops and wide array of recreational opportunities including an outstanding municipal golf course and the southern terminus of the North Central Pathway which will soon offer bikers and walkers a link to downtown Winchendon." by the city of gardner website

Holy crap! Shooting tonight at around 700pm at the new Gardner Spirit’s. Male shooter shot another male in the leg. Victim was transported to UMASS Worcester. Shooters was apprehended in the area of Mill St around 830.

I suggest every person in Ward 5 email our ward councilor Alekander Dernalowicz and demand to know what the cities plan is to curb the growing violence. We’ve now had a stabbing at Heywood, an armed robbery at Subway and now this shooting since July.

If you’re keen to reduce waste and improve the way you manage your kitchen trash, a countertop compost bin is a great place to start. These self-contained systems allow you to collect coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, and more! Countertop compost bins solve the problem by corralling your scraps, controlling odors, and making it easy to remember to be more conscious of your waste.

Stop by the Health Department to grab yours! ($5/each - cash or check only)

🍋🍏🧅🍓🥜Happy composting! 🍊🥝🥕🫑🥚

A Day-by-Day Look at The City of Gardner’s History
March 5, 1930: New residential district opens at Chester Park area in South Gardner
By Mike Richard
Many fine Gardner homes were built by the construction firm of Columbus & Berg – owned by Rudolph Columbus and Axel Berg. In fact, it was once said that the company was responsible for nearly half of the homes built in the first half century within the city.
In South Gardner, a housing project in an area known as Chester Park was a land developing project of Walter G. Richardson, who built “one family houses and bungalows of the modern type homes, that are of the type that all cities are proud to have,” The Gardner News reported in March of 1930.
This residential area was made up of houses in the area of Rouville, Summit and Jerome Ave., and Montvale, Clairmont, Mayfield and Sunset roads.
Eventually, the period during the Great Depression and World War 2 saw a dearth in real estate development within the city. However, the late 40s and early 1950s Baby Boom period also heralded a boom in the housing market.
As the housing market expanded, neighborhoods later sprung up in the Donna Ave., Ken Drive, Laurel Street area.
