WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?
Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen veins that have become dilated because of faulty venous valves. They are usually blue in color and may appear twisted or bulging.
Healthy veins contain valves that open and close to assist in the return flow of blood from the limbs to the heart. When these valves fail to open and close properly, blood can pool in the veins, causing increased pressure. The increase in pressure causes veins to become enlarged.
