Congratulations to 2023 GHV Hall of Fame Inductee Dr. Scott Wood!
Dr. Scott Wood’s journey began at Ventura High School, where he graduated in May 1976. During his senior year he earned All-State Football Honorable Mention and was recognized as the "Outstanding Lineman" by his conference opponents. Scott’s proudest moment was being a part of an undefeated football team during his junior and senior years. This achievement resulted in an awe-inspiring 23-game winning streak, a school record that still resonates today.
After high school, Scott embarked on an academic journey, graduating from Buena Vista College in 1981 with a degree in Economics/Political Science. While at Buena Vista he served as a captain of the Buena Vista Swim Team during his senior year and earned the Senior Award from the Swim Team.
Following his college years, Scott served our country with distinction in the United States Navy from 1981 to 1985. He served as an Aviation Maintenance Officer in Key West, Florida and Norfolk, Virginia.
But his journey did not stop there. After his Navy service, Scott attended the University of Iowa for a year and passionately played soccer with the University of Iowa soccer club. His dedication to sports and education eventually led him to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, from 1986 to 1989. During his time there, he was not only a member of the Palmer Chiropractic College soccer club but also played a pivotal role in its success, helping the club secure second place in the Midwest Regional Championships on two occasions. His soccer skills earned him the prestigious "President's Outstanding Player Award" by Palmer College.
In 1990, Scott opened Wood Chiropractic Clinic, a place where he continued his mission to serve the community. This dedication to service extended beyond his professional life, as he became a sideline physician for Garner-Hayfield and GHV Football, attending more than 300 football games over 31 years. He also shared his passion for drama, assisting in the direction of high school plays for ten years and directing for one year. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Garner Park & Rec youth soccer program, introducing the sport to his community. In 1999, he was named “Outstanding Citizen” by the Garner Jay Cees. Scott also volunteered his time to help the Garner-Hayfield Music Boosters where he served as the president for two years and helped purchase new marching band uniforms.
Scott's commitment to community service goes far beyond the sports field. He played an important role in the establishment of the High School Soccer program, a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sport he loves. He also helped establish the North Iowa Soccer Club, serving on its board for over 15 years and coaching numerous teams of varying ages.
Scott's involvement in the Garner Rotary Club is another shining example of his dedication to service. As a member for over 30 years, he served as President twice, as Sergeant of Arms for nearly 20 years, and played a crucial role in the Rotary Youth Exchange program where he hosted five exchange students. His contributions were so significant that he received the prestigious Paul Harris award twice.
In addition to these endeavors, Scott chaired the Duesey Days Committee for two years, served in the Garner Ceremonial Unit/Color Guard for several years, and held the position of President for the Garner Men's Golf Association for an incredible 20 years.
Not to be forgotten, Scott's spiritual commitment shines brightly as well. As a member of the Garner Evangelical & Reformed Church for over 30 years, he served as a Deacon, an Elder, taught Sunday School, and even presided over the church board for one year.
The GHV Hall of Fame has been established to create a lasting tribute to those who have brought honor to themselves, our school and our communities. Any accomplishments during the days of Garner, Hayfield, Garner-Hayfield, Ventura and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura are considered for the GHV Hall of Fame. The public is invited to the GHV Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 PM in the high school auditorium. The 2023 inductees are Dr. Scott Wood (Friend of GHV), Zrostlik Family (Friend of GHV) and the 1987 Ventura Girls High School Basketball Championship Team (Team).
