“Why does everything in women’s health sound TERRIFYING?” 😳

Dilation & Curettage.
Loop Electrosurgical Excisional Procedure (LEEP).
Endometrial Ablation.

Yikes. Even we agree those names sound like they belong in a horror movie, not your GYN’s office.

That’s why Kerry Autry, CNM/WHNP, jokes we should just rename them. Call it a “uterine look-see.” Or maybe a “polyp pick-out.” (Okay… we’re still workshopping it. 😉)

On this episode of Stirrups – GYN Procedures Explained, we break down what these procedures really are – safe, quick, and often done right in your doctor’s office – no haunted house required.

So, what exactly is a LEEP?

Dr. Scott explains: LEEP stands for Loop Electrosurgical Excisional Procedure. It’s a quick, in-office treatment that removes abnormal cervical tissue – usually done in just a few minutes, not hours. ⏱️

Here’s why someone might need it:

· A Pap smear or biopsy showed abnormal cells that could become precancerous if left untreated.

· The procedure removes those cells and provides a sample for the lab to confirm exactly what’s going on.

· Having a LEEP does not mean you have cancer – it’s done to prevent cancer in the future.

Soaking through pads every couple of hours? 🩸

"Please don’t put soap in there. Please don’t. We’re begging you."

Douching? Absolutely not, says Katie Hume, PA-C.

That aisle at the store? Walk right past it. It’s all marketing fluff. Your body is already a perfect, self-cleaning machine – engineered to do the job on its own. What could be more cool?

And here’s the bottom line: if there’s ever a not-so-fresh smell, that’s a sign something’s off – not something soap can fix. That’s when it’s time to book an appointment with your friendly GYN.

And while we’re on the subject of misconceptions, the latest episode of Stirrups – GYN Procedures Explained takes a candid look at common gynecological procedures – what they really are, how they’re done, and why they’re not nearly as scary as they sound.

Parents, wondering when your teen should first see a GYN?

👉 The answer: sooner than you think, but the first visit is usually just a chat. We’ll talk about periods, cramps, birth control questions, or what to expect as the body changes.

At Carolina Elite, most early visits are just conversations — no pap smear required until age 21. It’s about building comfort and trust early on.

🎧 We cover this and more in our latest podcast episode The All-Star Checkup: Your Annual Exam Demystified. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19rS_fle8Mk

🚫 Myth: “If I don’t need a pap, I don’t need an annual.”

✅ Truth: Annual visits are about so much more than a pap smear. They’re a chance to check in on breast health, hormones, birth control, mental health, bone health, and more.

Your wellness deserves more than a once-every-3-years pap.

🎧 Dive deeper in The All-Star Checkup: Your Annual Exam Demystified. We unpack what really happens at an annual — and why it matters at every stage of life.

Did you know bone density screening (DEXA scan) isn’t just for age 65+?

Kerry explains why your late 40s and 50s might actually be the right time to start the conversation – especially if hormones or family history are part of your story. Preventive care matters most before problems show up.
