OVERUSE INJURIES IN SPORTS | Overuse injuries develop gradually due to repetitive microtrauma to tendons, bones, and joints, unlike acute injuries from single traumatic events. Examples include tennis elbow, swimmer's shoulder, runner's knee, jumper's knee, Achilles tendinitis, and shin splints. They are prevalent and challenging to diagnose and treat in most sports and activities.

The human body adapts to physical stress, becoming stronger and more resilient. However, injuries occur when tissue breaks down faster than it can rebuild. Proper training and sensible practices can prevent most overuse injuries. Listening to your body and allowing sufficient rest between workouts is crucial for recovery and regeneration.

Adhering to the 10-percent rule during training or conditioning is recommended. Avoid increasing your training program or activity by more than 10 percent per week. This rule applies to pace, mileage increments for walkers and runners, and weight added in strength training programs.

If you believe you’re suffering from an overuse injury, schedule an appointment with one of our sports medicine specialists!

🗣️ REAL FEEDBACK | “I had a wonderful visit with Dr. Vasileff. I usually don’t like doctors because I feel they rush through things. However, Dr. Vasileff went over my X-rays, explained options, and even called me back himself to let me know what was decided. The level of care was absolutely refreshing.” –Stacy M.

✨ PT SPOTLIGHT ✨ | At Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center, we’re proud to have dedicated providers like Dylan Burleson, PT, DPT, ATC, on our team.

Dylan grew up in Gastonia and has always been passionate about helping people live healthier, more active lives. With certifications in Sports Manual Therapy, Dry Needling, and CrossFit L-2 training, along with his doctorate in physical therapy from Wingate University, Dylan is equipped to treat a wide range of patient needs.

⭐️ Why did you choose to become a physical therapist?
“I want people to live the healthiest and most active lives they can, and too often, injuries, health problems, or inactivity get in the way. Our bodies are resilient, and we are made to move. I want people to embrace the importance of rehab, strength training, and aerobic activity so they can live well for a long time.”

⭐️ What’s your favorite thing about being a PT?
“Seeing patients get back to doing the things they love without pain or limitations. Helping people regain their quality of life is the most rewarding part of my work.”

Outside of the clinic, he enjoys family time with his wife, two daughters, and their dogs—and he even owns a CrossFit gym where he coaches others in fitness and wellness.

We’re lucky to have Dylan on our team, helping patients recover and return to the activities they love most!
