Denim Day is one of the most recognized moments during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and it has a very specific origin and purpose.
Where it comes from
Denim Day started after a controversial ruling in the **Italy Supreme Court in the 1990s. In that case, a r**e conviction was overturned because the court suggested the victim’s tight jeans meant she must have helped remove them—implying consent.
That decision sparked outrage. The next day, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to protest. The movement grew globally, turning denim into a symbol of standing against victim-blaming.

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Zeta Phi Beta has reached out to support our efforts by helping raise funds for Grace and Mercy Establishment through a powerful evening: Boots, Pearls & Denim. Join us on Wednesday, April 29, as we come together to uplift survivors, raise awareness, and support those impacted by sexual assault and domestic violence.
In recognition of National Denim Day, guests are encouraged to wear denim as a bold statement of solidarity—standing against victim blaming and advocating for change.
Tickets are $15, and all proceeds will benefit Grace and Mercy Establishment, supporting our mission to serve survivors with care, resources, and hope.

As the Founder and Executive Director of Grace and Mercy Establishment in Gastonia, NC, I speak not only as a leader—but as a survivor.

I am a survivor of childhood molestation. And while the pain of that trauma remains a part of my story, so does the strength it built in me. Every day, I choose healing. I choose to speak up—not just for myself, but for those who still suffer in silence.
