We are entering into mid autumn and the winter months. The cold, the darkness of the shorter days and being couped up indoors can bring on feelings of sadness, depression and loneliness. If you haven't heard or experienced this before, it is called Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D. for short.
During this time of year and because of the symptoms mentioned in the previous paragraph, some people can become abusive ; verbally, mentally and or physically to their partners, family, or towards themselves. Some have suicidal ideation.
Several studies suggest SAD maybe brought on because of low vitamin D levels from low light exposure. Of course this a continually debated idea. However, it does stand to reason that low vitamin D levels can cause episodes of depression. After all, vitamin D is a hormone as well as a vitamin.
I would like to recommend a protocol that may help alleviate SAD for you or someone you care for. Supplement with 2,000 to 5,000 IU of vitamin D 3 each day, adjusted to your needs. Check your levels with a blood draw at the lab.
Supplement with omega 3 fish oil, 1,400 mg to 4,000 mg daily in divided doses. Ask your doctor before taking if you are on a prescription blood thinner. There are special lights that can be used as therapy. These can be purchased for sources available on the Internet or some clinics offer this service.
If needed, supplement with St John's wort. Use as directed on the package. If you are currently taking any prescription for anxiety or depression, do not use St John's wort.
As always, seek proper professional medical advice before taking any new prescriptions or supplements.
