An ABA layup!

Does your child love to throw things? You’re not alone. Throwing is often a way children explore movement, release energy, or communicate frustration.

Instead of stopping the behavior completely, try giving them safe and appropriate ways to meet that need. Create opportunities to throw soft balls into a basket, toss bean bags, play catch, or aim objects at a target. Teaching when and where throwing is okay helps children learn boundaries while still meeting their sensory and movement needs.

Sometimes behavior is communication. The goal is to guide it, not just stop it!

Another Saturday, another day highlighting accomplishments!
Today we're highlighting Breanna Clark! Breanna made history as the first female US athlete with an intellectual disability to secure a Paralympic medal, clinching the Gold in the Women’s 400m at the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Receiving an autism diagnosis at the age of four, she has pursued a diverse range of hobbies, including singing, dancing, listening to music, watching movies, playing piano, skating, riding her bike, playing video games, and visiting amusement parks.

Alongside her musical endeavors, she also demonstrated her athleticism by competing on the women’s track teams at Dorsey High School and Pasadena City College.

Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate!

Today we welcome the Year of the Horse, a symbol of strength, resilience, energy, and perseverance. In many cultures, the horse represents determination, freedom, and forward movement, qualities that inspire growth and new beginnings in the year ahead.

Lunar New Year is a time for family, reflection, honoring tradition, and setting intentions for prosperity, health, and happiness. It is also a beautiful reminder of the rich cultural diversity within the communities we serve.

We are proud to celebrate and support families from all backgrounds. May this Year of the Horse bring confidence, progress, and meaningful milestones for every child and family!

Autism is not one single experience, it is a spectrum made up of many unique strengths, sensitivities, and ways of interacting with the world!

From sensory processing and communication differences to deep special interests and emotional intensity, every autistic individual experiences a different combination of traits. Some may seek movement and input, some may feel overwhelmed by sounds or lights, some may communicate in beautifully unique ways, and many have incredible passions and talents that deserve to be celebrated.

Understanding the full spectrum helps us move away from stereotypes and toward compassion, support, and empowerment. When we recognize these differences, we create environments where children can thrive, grow, and feel truly understood.

Different does not mean less. It means uniquely wired and wonderfully made!

Who ya gunna call?
Today's trailblazer is the Ghostbuster himself - Dan Aykroyd! Diagnosed with Aspergers, which we now formally recognize as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dan awards credit to his special interests in giving him the idea for his major hit!
"One of my symptoms included my obsession with ghosts and law enforcement—I carry around a police badge with me, for example. I became obsessed by Hans Holzer, the greatest ghost hunter ever. That’s when the idea of my film Ghostbusters was born."
