Parents of children with autism experience higher levels of stress than parents of children with other disabilities, sometimes comparable to the stress of combat veterans. Research shows that over 80% of these parents report chronic stress, and they are at greater risk for anxiety, depression, and burnout.

They shouldn't have to do it alone!

Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or part of the community, know that asking for help is a sign of strength. Support groups, respite care, professional counseling, and simply checking in with a friend can make a difference. Let’s normalize offering help and accepting it!

• Autism Society helpline: 1-800-328-8476
• Local parent support groups
• Therapy or counseling for caregivers
• Join inclusive community events - these can be found via Facebook groups, a quick google, or through community groups!

Together, we can be the village every family deserves.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health, especially for growing kids.

For children with autism, mental health support can look different. Things like sensory sensitivities, communication differences, and changes in routine can impact how they experience the world. With the right support, kids can build coping skills, confidence, and feel more comfortable navigating daily life.

Early support makes a lasting difference. This month, we’re encouraging open conversations, greater understanding, and reminding families that support is always available when it’s needed.

Do you know someone with ASD and ADHD? Coined recently as AuDHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often co-occur, presenting a complex profile of traits that can overlap and interact in unique ways!

Individuals with both ASD and ADHD may experience heightened creativity, hyper-focus, strong memories, difficulties with social communication, increased impulsivity, and a combination of restricted interests and inattention. This co-occurrence can complicate diagnosis and treatment, as the symptoms of one condition can mask or mimic those of the other.

Comprehensive, individualized evaluations are essential for accurate diagnosis and effective intervention, especially because it was only 11 years ago that AuDHD was recognized. Tailored support strategies, incorporating behavioral therapies, educational accommodations, and sometimes medication, are crucial to addressing the diverse needs of individuals with both ASD and ADHD, enabling them to achieve better outcomes in various aspects of life!

Autism is often talked about in terms of challenges, but it is just as important to recognize the many strengths that autistic individuals bring to the world.

Many autistic individuals demonstrate remarkable abilities such as deep focus, strong memory, creativity, analytical thinking, and a strong sense of honesty and integrity plus so many more. These strengths can support success in learning, problem solving, innovation, and building meaningful contributions in their communities.

Every autistic person is unique, with their own talents, interests, and ways of thinking. When we shift the conversation to include strengths alongside support needs, we create more understanding, more acceptance, and more opportunities for individuals to thrive!
