✨ Women’s History Month: Celebrating Women in Yoga ✨

This month we’re honoring women who are shaping the future of yoga and expanding who feels welcome in the practice. Today we’re celebrating Touré Akela, a powerful teacher, leader, and community builder in the modern yoga world.

Based in Atlanta, Touré is the founder of SWAY Energy Center (Southwest Atlanta Yoga), a studio created to bring yoga, healing, and community to an area that previously had very few yoga spaces. Her mission has always been clear: make yoga accessible, inclusive, and deeply transformative for everyone.

Some inspiring things about Touré:

🧘🏾‍♀️ Over two decades of yoga practice and thousands of hours teaching students and training new teachers.
🌿 Founder of a unique Metaphysical Hatha Yoga teacher training, blending breath, intention, and spiritual awareness.
🎖 Army veteran whose life was transformed through the healing power of yoga.
📚 Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500) who has helped certify many of Atlanta’s newest yoga teachers.
💛 Community advocate, committed to making yoga accessible in historically underserved neighborhoods.

Touré’s work reminds us that yoga is more than poses—it’s service, leadership, healing, and community.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women expanding yoga’s reach and making the practice more inclusive for future generations.

Forget the “pretzel” stereotypes. If you’re waiting to be flexible or “fit” enough to start, you’re missing the point — and these 5 myths are likely what’s holding you back.

1. “You have to be flexible to do yoga”
This is the most common barrier for beginners. Saying you’re too inflexible for yoga is like saying you’re too dirty to take a shower. Flexibility is a result of the practice, not a prerequisite. Yoga is about your personal journey, and many people start by simply trying to reach past their knees.

2. “Yoga is just stretching”
While stretching is a component, a full practice is a “moving meditation” that balances physical postures with breathwork and mental focus. It can be incredibly physically demanding, building significant strength, stamina, and cardiovascular health.

3. “Yoga is a religion”
Yoga is a spiritual and philosophical technology, but it is not a religion. While it has roots in ancient Indian traditions, it does not require a specific belief system and can complement any personal faith or be practiced as a purely secular activity.

4. “Yoga is only for women”
Historically, yoga was almost exclusively a men’s practice in India for centuries. Today, its benefits for recovery and focus are widely recognized by male athletes in the NFL, NBA, and MLB.

5. “You must master advanced poses to get the benefits”
You don’t need to do a handstand or a headstand to “be good” at yoga. The physical benefits like reduced stress and improved joint mobility come from consistent practiceat any level. In fact, using yoga props like blocks and straps is a sign of an advanced practitioner who knows how to support their body correctly

There are many more myths out there about Yoga. Why don’t you bust some of those myths by creating your own unique practice at Prana Yoga Center?

Meet Jeanne, our latest Member Spotlight 💡

For over 20 years, Jeanne has been part of the heart of Prana Yoga Center. What began as a complement to running became something much deeper—an anchor through motherhood, surgery, healing, and every season in between.

Yoga has taught her acceptance, calm, and the power of simply showing up. And when movement was limited, community became her lifeline.

Jeanne embodies what Prana is all about: presence, authenticity, and connection. We’re so grateful for you. 🤍
