Many young children who are pre-verbal aren’t yet symbolic and pictures are symbols. Let’s think about that before suggesting that pictures be used in place of words with a non-verbal child!

Say kitty!

Confrontation naming and yes/no questions rarely yield results in children who have very little expressive language. There is too much for the child to process. Demands to say words places the motivation externally to the child.

Lets try something else:

Adult: Meow! Meow! MEOW!!
(Gesturing with a toy cat)
Meow! Meow! MEOW!
Meow! Meow! …………
Child: MEOW!
Adult: Yes! Meow! Kitty says
meow!

A child just beginning to produce language is better able to process a model of a simple sound during play with a tangible object.
