Let's see those Heart of Gold pups enjoying their post visit bandanas!

We believe in a family atmosphere. Our staff are very important to us and this weekend is about them. We are all spending the weekend at Sampson state park camping as a group. The clinic has provided sites and all staff have provided bits and pieces for our meals. We are so thankful for our weekend camp cook, delicious snack maker, and wonderful staff psychologist/counselor Allison Sacheli. More photos to come 🥰

Interesting thought: since cats claws curve downwards, after climbing up a tree they cannot generally turn around and climb down.... they need to back down the tree to get down safely!

Happy Meow Monday!

Did you know that house cats share several common characteristics with wild tigers?

The most common behaviors domestic cats share are stalking, pouncing, and scratching.

Post those photos/videos of your cat stalking and pouncing things!

Happy Woof Wednesday!

Did you know that dalmatians are born completely white and their spots start to come in around 10 days old up to 18 months old? Some dalmatians carry a genetic trait where their spots come in the become deaf. Puppies are normally born deaf and develop their hearing around 3 weeks of age. So some dalmatians are born deaf, develop hearing, then turn deaf again depending on their disease process.

The disease process by which hearing is lost is associated with melanocytes. These are the cells that produce and contain the black pigment for the spots. It seems that melanocytes are also vital for the normal functioning of the inner ear.

This is the case with Mollie, Dr. Gulvin's dalmatian. She was returned to the breeder after 14 weeks of age because she became deaf. That's okay, hand signals work just fine for her. She even watches the other dogs and comes to the house when the other dogs look towards the door after we call them!

Outline: Deafness, linked to a gene involved in their patchy piebald colouration, is common in Dalmatians. About 15-30% of dogs are affected and about 5% are deaf in both ears. Affected dogs are at greater risk of injury through, for example, road traffic accidents. Dogs should be tested for hearing...

Trotting through the week Tuesday!

Did you know that horses cannot breathe through their mouth?? They are considered obligate nasal breathers. This is because the soft palate separates the nasal cavity from the oral cavity. This is important to know when your horse shows signs of upper respiratory infection, like snotty nose or sounding congested in the nose. This is also important to know if your horse comes into contact with something that they are allergic to and their face starts to swell - this can be a severe medical emergency where time is of the essence!

Please call to let us know about any nasal discharge or signs of allergic reaction as soon as you notice any changes start to happen. We may be able to help remotely, or we will send Dr. Gulvin or Dr. McCall to assist!
