This school year is the start of Arkansas putting the new 3rd grade reading promotion rules into place. Beginning with the end of the 2025–26 year, students who don’t meet the reading benchmark may be retained, but there are good-cause exemptions that can still allow promotion.

The “minimum reading standard” is defined in the guidance as a Level 2 or higher on the Grade 3 ATLAS ELA assessment for promotion eligibility.

Good-cause exemptions include:
• English learners with less than 3 years of English instruction
• Students with an IEP or 504 who’ve had 2+ years of strong reading intervention
• Students already retained in K–3
• Students with 2+ years of intensive reading intervention who still show a reading delay
• Students who can show they’re reading on grade level through work samples
• Special situations approved by the state

All students who don’t meet the standard will get extra reading help, whether they stay in 3rd or move to 4th with an exemption.

If you’re worried about your child’s reading progress, reach out today. We’re here to help.

Reading shouldn’t feel like a daily struggle.

Research shows that about 20% of children have dyslexia, and many go undiagnosed until upper elementary or even middle school. The earlier we understand how a child learns, the faster we can help them succeed.

At Speechology NWA, we offer comprehensive dyslexia evaluations and evidence-based reading intervention. Our goal is to help kids feel confident, capable, and proud of their progress.

If your child avoids reading, mixes up letters, or seems bright but frustrated by schoolwork, trust your gut—it might be time for an evaluation.

Send us a message or give us a call. Early identification leads to lifelong confidence in learning.

We accept Medicaid, BCBS, Municipal, and EFA Funds.

🚨 Dyslexia doesn’t start in 3rd grade.
It starts in the brain long before a child ever picks up a book.

Research shows kids with dyslexia have differences in how their brain processes language before kindergarten. That means we can spot it early… and help early.

If your child is struggling with reading, spelling, or remembering sight words. Don’t wait for them to “catch up.”
The sooner we understand how their brain learns, the sooner we can support it.

🚨 Do. Not. Wait. 🚨
If a child starts behind in reading, the odds of catching up fall fast:
📚 49% in kindergarten
📘 29% in first grade
📗 18% in second grade
📕 5% in third grade

We don’t have a third-grade reading crisis — we have an early learning opportunity.
When parents, teachers, and interventionists work together early, kids thrive.

At Speechology NWA, we believe prevention is better than remediation.
Let’s start early. Let’s start strong.

📊 Let’s talk about math and dyslexia.

Research shows that up to half of students with reading disabilities also have math disabilities — even when they’re receiving the right reading supports.

🧠 These overlapping challenges mean students need not only accommodations but also targeted intervention — in both reading and math.

Long-term math difficulties don’t just affect grades. They impact everyday life skills and future opportunities.
Think about careers in nursing, engineering, technology, construction, or skilled trades — all of these require math for certification or coursework.

💬 If your child struggles with reading and math, early, evidence-based intervention can change their entire educational path.

🌟 Client Spotlight! 🌟

We are so proud to celebrate this sweet girl today — she has officially graduated from private therapy at Speechology NWA! 🎉

When she first began intervention, she was working so hard to build her foundational literacy skills. After a year of consistent, systematic, and evidence-based intervention, her scores have skyrocketed. She made an incredible 30-point growth on a standardized subtest in just one year!

While we’re sad to say goodbye, we couldn’t be more proud. She is a shining example of what’s possible with structured literacy, teamwork, and perseverance! ✨📚

Proof it was a long Monday: during what was supposed to be a “reward” practice break, the clinician joined in a puzzle race… and immediately hit full brain shutdown mode. 🧩😂

Luckily, the client stepped up as the tiny genius coach of the day, guiding each piece into place like a pro. Still got those language, reasoning, and problem-solving reps in…just with a side of humble pie for the adult in the room😅

📚 Did you know? Research shows that about 1 in 5 students have dyslexia or characteristics of it.

That means in a typical classroom of 24 kids, about 4–5 may have dyslexia. And in a school of 500 students, around 100 could have dyslexia and need specialized intervention.

This is why early screening and structured literacy are so important. Every child deserves the tools and support they need to succeed. ❤️

👉 If you have concerns about your child’s reading, don’t hesitate to reach out. Early identification can make all the difference!

At Speechology NWA, we know that dyslexia is not a sign of low intelligence or lack of effort — it is a language-based learning difference that affects reading, spelling, and writing.

1 in 5 students show signs of dyslexia, yet with the right support and structured literacy intervention, these students can thrive. Early identification and evidence-based therapy make all the difference.

This month, let’s work together to raise awareness, support families, and celebrate the strengths of individuals with dyslexia. Every child deserves the tools to unlock their potential.
