Q: I’m having nosebleeds. What could be causing them, and when should I see a doctor?

A: Nosebleeds have various potential causes, including dry air, allergies, nose picking, frequent blowing, and even structural issues like a deviated septum. They can also be a symptom of serious health problems like high blood pressure or a bleeding disorder.

See a doctor for your nosebleeds if:

- They happen more than once a week.
- They last longer than 20 minutes.
- They involve more than a cup of blood.
- They interfere with your breathing.
- They occur after a head injury.

What is an Acoustic Neuroma? | An acoustic neuroma is a rare, noncancerous tumor that grows on the nerve that links your ear to your brain.

🔍 Symptoms include:
• Ringing in one ear (tinnitus)
• Balance problems
• Dizziness

Although typically benign, acoustic neuromas can grow large enough to be life-threatening, pressing on the brainstem and causing spinal fluid to build up.
If you’re experiencing the symptoms mentioned above, see Dr. Franklin right away for proper intervention. This is crucial for keeping the tumor from growing and causing complications.

And here we are again with our series! Today, Dr. Franklin is answering a common question about ear care.

Q: How often should I remove my child’s earwax?
A: You actually shouldn’t remove it all. While usually treated as a nuisance or sign of poor hygiene, earwax (also known as cerumen) actually plays an important role: it lubricates your ear canal and protects your ear from germs and dirt.

In healthy ears, wax usually moves outward naturally and falls out on its own. Removing it, particularly with cotton swabs (Q-tips), can do more harm than good. It may push the wax deeper, leading to blockage, discomfort, or even injury to the ear canal or eardrum.

If you notice your child’s ear produces more earwax than needed, schedule an appointment with Dr. Franklin for safe and effective removal. Contact us at (512) 869-0604.

“During a recent hospital stay due to an unrelated matter, a swab test of my left nostril revealed that I have a bacterial infection in my sinuses and that if mucus were to accumulate in my lungs, it would pose a serious problem. A friend who had been previously treated by Dr. Franklin recommended him. I immediately called Dr. Franklin’s office, requesting the earliest available appointment to arrange appropriate treatment for a serious condition.

The response was instantaneous, and I was offered an appointment at 9 AM the following morning. At that appointment, a brief discussion of my symptoms and an examination by Dr. Franklin confirmed the potentially dangerous condition. He then prescribed a regimen of strong antibiotics and various over-the-counter medications to be administered for three weeks, after which a CT scan would indicate an appropriate subsequent treatment to cure my illness.

Dr. Franklin is an excellent and responsive listener: he provides thorough answers to questions, with a sense of urgency. His office staff is efficient and personable, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of my referral to him for treatment.” – Fred B. https://bit.ly/34PY2df

Q: I keep losing my voice or sounding hoarse. What’s going on?
A: Hoarseness happens when your vocal cords become irritated, inflamed, or strained, and it’s often your body’s way of saying “slow down.” Common causes include overusing your voice (yelling or speaking for long periods), acid reflux, smoking, allergies, and laryngitis, which is usually triggered by a viral infection.

Hoarseness often goes away on its own, just after a few days of rest. If it stays longer than a few weeks, visit your ENT specialist for an evaluation, as it may signal a serious issue such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, cysts, or cancer.

A laryngoscopy can help your doctor get a clear view of your vocal cords and determine the appropriate solution to your problem.
