This 4th of July, let’s remember that celebration doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful.

For many in our community - especially those living with PTSD, sensory sensitivities, or anxiety - traditional festivities like fireworks and large crowds can be overwhelming.

Here are some alternative ways to honor Independence Day with care and compassion:

🎨 Create: Paint or craft red, white, and blue art with calming music in the background

📚 Reflect: Read stories of resilience and freedom, especially from underrepresented voices

🎧 Curate: Make a playlist of songs that celebrate freedom, hope, and unity

🕯️ Light: Use candles or string lights to create a soft, celebratory glow

💌 Connect: Write letters to veterans or those currently serving, expressing gratitude

Freedom means the ability to choose how we celebrate. Let’s make space for joy that feels safe, inclusive, and healing. ❤️🤍💙

People may have a range of reactions after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, act of violence, or serious accident. Common reactions include feeling anxious, sad, or angry; having trouble concentrating and sleeping; and thinking about what happened. Most people will recover from these symptoms, and their reactions will lessen over time.

People may be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) if their symptoms last for an extended period after a traumatic event and begin to interfere with aspects of daily life, such as relationships or work. People who have PTSD may continue to feel stressed or frightened, even though they are not in danger.

June is PTSD Awareness Month. Today is PTSD Awareness Day. If you think you may be suffering from PTSD, reach out to someone, or learn more about it here: https://www.samhsa.gov/mental-health/what-is-mental-health/conditions/ptsd
