To celebrate National Breastfeeding Month, we asked some graduates of our Lactation Program about their experience with breastfeeding!
"As an experienced postpartum and labor and delivery nurse, I thought I was fully prepared to breastfeed with minimal assistance. What I wasn't prepared for was having a complicated pregnancy that resulted in delivering a premature baby. That combined with several risk factors for delayed lactation and low production due to a chronic health condition, I was concerned with my ability to produce enough for the needs of my baby. Once I was discharged from the hospital, I found myself somewhat lost in what to do next as my son wasn't gaining weight adequately despite doing everything I possibly could. He wasn't transferring enough at the breast and I didn't know that until I saw lactation for an outpatient visit. I ended up seeing Julie from Beebe's lactation team outpatient at least 4 separate times and each time I learned new, helpful tips as I graduated from exclusively pumping and feeding expressed breastmilk via bottle, to latching with a ni**le shield, and then eventually exclusively breastfeeding. I even was able to build up a slight oversupply to stock in my freezer. I couldn't be happier with the transparency and attention I received from Beebe's Lactation Program. Without them, I know my journey would not have been nearly as successful. I'm going on 6 months of exclusively feeding my baby breastmilk and I am so proud to be where we are now. It feels like it has gone by so fast." -Alexandria Short
