Meet Jessica. She’s a cancer survivor and her daughter has Type 1 diabetes. They’re among millions of Americans who are about to face a major increase in health insurance costs.

Enhanced Premium Tax Credits (EPTCs) are currently helping 24 million people – including our patients – afford high-quality healthcare coverage through the insurance Marketplace (https://bit.ly/4lQqq51). Americans who purchase insurance on their own and rely on the tax credit are now facing skyrocketing costs if Congress allows the credit to expire at the end of 2025, putting at risk the health of children like Jessica’s daughter.

“We were living a perfectly normal life, and we suddenly had a child that had a chronic illness,” said Jessica. “We’re not wealthy. Money can get tight…we need Congress to take action now. It’s vital for us.”

⚠️Summer fun comes with risks, but simple precautions can help prevent injuries.

💧 Falls
➡️ Prevention: Use slip-resistant mats near pools and decks, and supervise kids closely. Consider wearing non-slip, supportive shoes.

🚗 Motor vehicle crashes
➡️ Prevention: Buckle up, stay focused and ensure proper vehicle maintenance before long trips.

🚴 Bicycle and pedestrian injuries
➡️ Prevention: Always wear a helmet when biking, use reflective clothing and follow traffic rules.

☀️ Heat-related illness
➡️ Prevention: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade. Avoid strenuous activity during peak sun hours (between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and remember that children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses are especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.

🔥 Burn injuries
➡️ Prevention: Take special care around grills, fire pits, fireworks and lawn equipment. Never refuel gas-powered mower engines while they’re hot, and always keep children at a safe distance.

If you or someone else is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. To find emergency care in your area, visit: https://bit.ly/46eTjmG

St. David’s South Austin Medical Center is proud to be home to Austin’s only adult transplant and cellular therapy program, and therefore it’s very important to us we raise awareness and critical funds for blood cancer research. To do this, we partner with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Last week, we had the joy of teaming up with both LLS and their partner Austin Subaru as part of the Subaru Loves to Care initiative. 💙 Together, they delivered warm, fuzzy blankets and heartfelt messages to our oncology patients right here at SDSAMC—a small gesture that brings big comfort to those facing some of their toughest days.

It’s moments like these that remind us how powerful community, compassion, and a little bit of cozy can be.
