Whether you've been doing child-centered play therapy for years and are curious about adding an animal, or you're an experienced animal-assisted therapist wanting a stronger clinical framework — this training was designed for you. No prior experience with both modalities is required.
This 3-hour in-person CEU covers the foundations of both child-centered play therapy (CCPT) and animal-assisted therapy (AAT), then builds toward a practical integration framework grounded in attunement, co-regulation, and trauma-informed practice. A full hour is dedicated to ethics — including scope of practice when one modality is new to you, dual obligations to client and animal welfare, informed consent, and the specific boundary questions that arise when these two modalities intersect. More than half the training is experiential, with peer learning intentionally structured so clinicians experienced in one modality learn from those experienced in the other.
Who should attend: Licensed therapists, counselors, and social workers who work with children and adolescents. Appropriate for those new to CCPT, new to AAT, or new to both.
Learning objectives: Participants will be able to (1) describe the core principles of CCPT and AAT; (2) identify the theoretical overlap between the two models; (3) apply child-centered principles to sessions where an animal is present; and (4) analyze ethical considerations specific to integrated AAT-CCPT practice, including scope of practice, animal welfare, and informed consent.
Format: 3 hours | In-person | 3.0 CE credits (1.0 ethics) | Introductory–Intermediate
