A medial branch block is used to determine if low back pain is due to arthritis in the facet joints of the spine. In this procedure, an anesthetic and sometimes a steroid is injected near the medial branch nerves. This injection is a diagnostic and potentially therapeutic tool which stops the nerves from communicating with the brain. A patient may experience minimal to complete pain relief. If pain relief is experienced, even in the first few days, that means the pain is due to arthritis and the procedure can be repeated or a longer-lasting procedure can be performed for several months of relief.
