What the human body goes through while pregnant is amazing and cannot be discounted! No wonder pregnancy takes a huge physical and emotional toll on those of us with uteruses. Pelvic health PT is here to help!!

Shocker: It takes far more energy to grow life than scientists once believed.

A Duke University study found that pregnancy rivals elite endurance events, making it the most energetically demanding activity the human body can sustain, equivalent to running a 40-week marathon.

Another peer-reviewed study published in Science found that pregnancy requires an additional 50,000 calories over nine months, with 96% of that energy coming directly from the mother. A woman’s resting energy use can rise by up to 30%, meaning her body works harder every single day, even at rest.

To put it in perspective, that’s like eating 50 pints of Ben & Jerry’s or sustaining the daily energy output of a Tour de France cyclist.

The energy it takes to grow life makes pregnancy one of the most extreme athletic feats on Earth. 🫶

September is Gynecological and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Physical therapy is beneficial to address pelvic floor dysfunction associated with gynecological cancer and treatment. Pelvic floor dysfunctions could include incontinence, constipation, diarrhea, sexual dysfunctions, or pelvic pain. Physical therapy will look at range of motion and strength deficits as well as soft tissue and scar tissue adhesions from radiation and/or surgery.

If you or someone you know, could benefit from physical therapy, please contact us at www.pelviclovephysio.com

August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month

Did you know that physical therapists can help with breastfeeding?

Many women have pain or discomfort from postural dysfunctions related to breastfeeding. Physical therapy can help nursing mothers with different manual therapy techniques including myofascial release, soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilizations or muscle energy techniques. They can instruct women in exercises for stretching and strengthening to improve their mobility and posture for breastfeeding.

Some women get clogged ducts and mastitis, which is a painful infection. Physical therapists can help by using soft tissue mobilization and manual lymphatic drainage techniques. Therapeutic ultrasound (a modality commonly used by physical therapists) is also an effective tool in managing clogged ducts. We are able to get patients in for clogged milk ducts within 24 hours, so please reach out ASAP if you or a loved one is struggling with this issue!

While a woman is breastfeeding, she may have hormonal imbalances that can lead to joint laxity, pain, and even genitourinary dryness. Physical therapists are experts at assessing and treating all types of joint dysfunctions. As specialists in women's health physical therapy, we can also address any symptoms of genitourinary dryness.
