GentleCure is the first and only skin cancer treatment with ultrasound images. These ultrasound images show the Radiation Therapist how big and deep the skin cancer is, which allows the exact amount of X-ray energy to be used at each visit to kill the skin cancer. This low-level X-ray energy is similar to what dentists use to X-ray teeth. Germantown Dermatology is excited to be able to offer this sophisticated skin cancer treatment to patients as an alternative option to Mohs Surgery and to excision.

The latest dermatology research from University of California San Diego and University of Pittsburg examined the effects of UV nail dryers on mice and human cell lines. It shows that repeated exposure to UV light has a damaging effect on DNA and causes mutations in human cells that could increase the risk of skin cancer and could cause aesthetic damage, such as fine lines and wrinkles. This is new research, and, while it will take further studies to conclusively show if skin cancer is linked to UV dryers, we dermatologists are offering new guidance and advice based on this study.

Meet Kathy Lohman, RN, MSN, FNP

A lifelong Memphian, Kathy graduated Hutchison School in 1998 and continued her studies at Rhodes College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, and at Vanderbilt University, where she was awarded a Master of Science in Nursing. She is a board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Kathy has worked in both Urgent Care and Internal Medicine settings. She and her husband have two children.
