On Friday, June 12th we will be hosting a FREE VIRTUAL event with 1 NBCC or ACE approved Continuing Education unit for those interested!

This introductory workshop is designed for mental health professionals and educators working with children who present with behavioral challenges that interfere with therapy, learning, and engagement—particularly in situations where therapy or teaching cannot effectively begin because behavior is getting in the way. The training will provide a practical overview of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and how its core principles can be integrated into mental health care settings. A primary focus of this training is addressing what to do when therapy or teaching cannot effectively start and/or make progress due to behavioral barriers.

The presenter will utilize lecture, real-world case examples, and practical application strategies to support learning objectives and promote immediate implementation in clinical practice. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the function of behavior, identifying barriers that prevent engagement in therapy or learning, and applying simple, effective strategies to increase participation and reduce interfering behaviors- particularly in situations where therapy or teaching cannot effectively begin.

Topics covered will include:
Overview of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) including functions of behavior
Common behavioral barriers in therapy and learning environments
Alignment between ABA principles and mental health practices
Practical strategies for increasing engagement and participation
Addressing situations in which therapy or teaching cannot begin due to behavioral barriers
Use of environmental manipulation and teaching replacement behaviors
Generalization across settings (clinic, home, school)

Oftentimes we see resistance in others as an act of willful defiance, but that may be missing the mark and lead others to shut down or dig their heals in further if they feel invalidated.

Instead, ask nonjudmentally, with curiosity: "What's the threat?" Or, for younger children, "What are you worried about?" or "What do you not like about that?"

Make sure to validate their emotional expression: "that makes sense" or "thank you for telling me, I know that must feel scary" AND cheerlead them: "and I know that you can handle this. Let's think of some times in the past where you felt scared and faced your fears anyway"

Resistance is protective, and when we can identify the exact threat, we're better able to address it effectively.

Sometimes just naming the fear and feeling heard is all we need to gain the courage to take the next step.
