Excited to announce that I am now a EMDR trained provider! Here’s a bit about how EMDR can benefit those who have experienced a stressful event:

“Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.”

If you’re frequently disappointed by the gifts or celebrations you receive on special occasions like Valentine’s Day, your birthday, anniversaries, etc., here are a few things you could consider:
🗣️ Are you communicating how you’d like to celebrate and your expectations?
🫶 Are you generally happy with how the people around you are treating you on a daily basis? This could impact your expectations and their expectations.
😔 Is there someone or something missing from the celebration? Grief can show up at any time.
⏳ Are you threatened by a life “timeline”? Special occasions could be a reminder of feeling “behind”.
These are only a few things that could impact how we feel after special occasions. These feelings are trying to tell you something. Listen.

You can celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing love to more people in your life than just a romantic partner. Here’s just a few ways:
🎉 Plan a gathering so you can spend time with people you care about
📞 Reach out to someone you haven’t connected with in a while to just check in
🌟 Brighten someone’s day with a written card, homemade treat, coffee, smile, etc.
☺️ Treat yourself to something special to show yourself love
🤝 Volunteer at an animal shelter, food kitchen, tutoring center, etc.
📢 Verbalize your affection! Don’t assume they know how you feel

My feelings are my feelings, and my feelings aren’t facts
This says it all. YES, your feelings are valid AND your feelings may not always be factual. Sometimes we engage in Emotional Reasoning. This can lead us to lean into unhelpful internal dialogues and limit our behaviors
Here’s a few examples:
😨“I feel undeserving of the promotion. So I won’t advocate for myself.” You could actually really deserve the promotion!
😱”I feel fearful of this activity despite the evidence supporting the fact it’s safe.” Your fear may be illogical.
☹️”I feel guilty so I must have done something wrong.” You might just be setting a necessary boundary that is new for you.
You are able to acknowledge your feelings and challenge unproductive patterns. 💪🏼
