The Gardens of Germantown Memory Care

The Gardens of Germantown Memory Care We are pleased to invite you to the Gardens of Germantown page! Please feel free to check out our pictures, events, and updates weekly! Welcome Home!

The Gardens of Germantown is the first community completely focused on memory care and the only progressive memory care in the Mid-South, offering three distinct neighborhoods based on our residents’ level of cognitive decline. Each neighborhood has its own dining and living area—just like home! The large living rooms allow residents to engage with others, getting to know their neighbors and making new friends. Our open-floor concept encourages residents to participate in activities and enjoy life at the Gardens. Best of all, residents feel more connected and cared about from day-one. The Gardens of Germantown is conveniently located between Poplar Pike and Poplar Avenue near Forest Hill Irene between Germantown and Collierville, also near East Memphis.

Ola! Today, we “traveled” to Brazil! Our beautiful resident, Sonia, was born and raised in Brazil so she taught us a few words of Portuguese. We were serenaded this morning by Suzuki Strings, Germantown Baptist Violin program, and then enjoyed passion fruit tea and popcorn, while playing Bucket List Bingo.
Brazilian singer Deborah Swinney was the perfect ending to our Ageless Adventure! Her beautiful Bossa Nova music put us in the mood for Carnival! Thank you to Suzuki Strings, Deborah Swinney, and Creative Aging for booking Deborah for us!

As part of our Ageless Adventures, we wanted to tap into our residents experience by sharing their advice to future generations. They gave us some great pearls of wisdom so we are ready to “plant” our capsule and open it in 10 years!

Our Luau continued this afternoon with Happy Hour and entertainment- Pina Colada punch with umbrella straws, chocolate covered pineapples, AND a hula performance by Dora! She was fabulous, the residents had a blast! And we got another stamp in our passport!

Aloha! This morning, we “traveled” to Hawaii for an all day Luau! We lit our “fire” for the ceremony (symbolizing burning away negativity and connecting with our ancestors) and of course, when you have a campfire, you must snack on S’mores!
“Water” at a luau symbolizes life and wealth so we had a friendly resident/staff water balloon contest to see how many people could hit Andre… the residents won! Many thanks to Andre for being our target!!! Stay tuned for more fun this afternoon!

Konnichiwa! Today, the Madonna Learning Center joined us as we “traveled” to Japan! Our own Yasuko was born in Japan so she taught us a few words in Japanese. We wore our headbands, made origami hearts, ate some Japanese snacks, drank green tea, exercised to “Kung Fu Fighting” and learned some karate moves from one of the students! It was a FUN afternoon and we got another stamp in our passports!!!

G’day, Mate! Today, we figuratively traveled to Australia and literally traveled to the ZOO! One of our residents desperately wanted to go so we made it happen 👏👏👏 While we were there, we all participated in a scavenger hunt and Jennifer got to check off a bucket list item- ride a Zipline for the first time!
In the afternoon, the staff and residents played Jeopardy and the residents won!!!

🌟 It’s National Assisted Living Week! 🌟

This year’s theme, “Ageless Adventure,” reminds us that every day is an opportunity to try something new, embrace joy, and celebrate life at every age. 🎉

Our Engagement and Memory Care Directors have put together some exciting adventures for our residents, including:

✈️ Passport to Fun
📝 Bucket List Bingo
🎮 Extreme Sports (VR or IRL!)
🎢 Wild Rides: Outings to Unique Attractions
🌍 Virtual Travel to Destinations Near & Far

We can’t wait to share these experiences and create lasting memories together. 💜

Vital Heroes are all around us… they don’t have to have a superpower or wear a cape. I asked our residents what superpowers they would like to have and was surprised to find our residents didn’t want one. They prefer small acts of kindness. I asked them to give me an example of how they had helped someone and was brought to tears by their stories. One resident ran to a neighbor’s house when she was 8 to get help when her Grandmother’s house caught fire. I heard stories from our nurses. I heard stories from our teachers. All very moving!
I challenged them to again be a Vital Hero this week and perform the act of kindness from the card they picked. I saw quite a few happen right after our activity!

Wah Gwaan! Today, we “traveled” to Jamaica, home country for one of our residents and while we enjoyed plantain chips and ginger beer, she taught us a few words of Patois!
We also did a little “stargazing” by researching and learning about celebrity stars who are from each of our passport countries/cultures. Who do you know from Jamaica?
