I am writing to share the important and incredibly difficult decision I've made to retire from clinical medicine and close ProActive Heart & Vein Center next month. It’s a moment filled with excitement and a touch of nervousness, as I embark on this new chapter in my life pursuing non-clinical opportunities. For those of you who have expressed concern, don’t worry I am in good health and so is my family! For the past 17 years here in Memphis and the last nearly 13 years since I founded ProActive, I have devoted my energy to practicing medicine in a way that I believed truly benefited our patients. I have always strived to provide the highest level of cardiology, vein and vascular care in the most comfortable of environments and the journey has been nothing short of amazing. Together with an incredible team of dedicated, talented employees we have touched the lives of thousands of patients in the greater Memphis area and beyond. Rest assured, we are working exhaustively to help ease the transition for so many wonderful patients to their next medical providers and to find excellent next workplaces for our incredible employees without whom I could not have had provided the superb experience to our patients.
Even with the praises we have earned and the annual Top Doc recognitions I have been so blessed to have received, I still have wondered at times whether the countless hours of dedication made a difference or even is noticed. The so many incredible stories I have heard this past week from patients and referring medical providers about how their lives and that of their loved ones have been forever changed and transformed by ProActive has made me realize just how much of an impact we have made. Being a doctor has been such a blessing and the decision to retire from seeing patients has been the most difficult decision of my life. But the years of countless hours of dedication, often 15 or 16 hours a day or more, is difficult to sustain.
They say, you start to view the world differently when you turn 50, and sure enough it has happened to me too! As my kids are growing up and I think of the impact I would like to have on this world, it is time for me to step on to new challenges. I have always wanted to write a book about my experiences as a doctor and to share the incredible things I have learned from my wonderful patients over the years. So what’s next besides writing? I am really interested in seeing how technology will impact the future of medical practice and whether I can contribute to its growth in a way that it remains focused on quality patient interactions. Patients have often told me that I should become a talk show host because I bonded with so many fascinating and different people, so who knows what the future will bring? One thing I know for sure is that patients and their families will always be at the center of my heart.
With many thanks from the bottom of my heart and deepfelt gratitude
