I want to share why helping people using food, personalized nutrition and lifestyle is so important to me.
As some of you know, I have a passion for helping people regulate their blood sugar as a foundation for eradicating many symptoms and health challenges and bringing greater balance to their mind, body and life. The primary reasons for this are twofold:
2) I have seen over and over again in my practice how balancing this one aspect of our physiology alleviates so many other imbalances in the body, and allows you to live a sweeter life.
Today, I'd like to share my story as an example.
I used to always consider myself healthy- I ate well, exercised, and did all the right things. However, I always had "stuff" going on in my body that no doctor could explain.
I'd ask: why do I get fibroids; why do I have acne; why am I always tired; why am I forgetting things; why is my blood pressure high; why am I developing breast cysts that trigger a biopsy, why are my lab test normal yet I get all of this "stuff" happening in my body.
My doctors were never able to answer me; they just said, be happy, your lab work is all normal.
It wasn't until I had decided to change my career from lawyer to nutritionist that I discovered the answer. In nutrition school, I learned about the hemoglobin A1C test, a test that is a far better indicator of blood sugar imbalances than the standard fasting glucose test that every doctor does.
When I had this test, my results were 5.7- still in the normal range. Now, the doctor said, you are fine- normal. However, I was in a functional and integrative nutrition program (one that focuses on optimal functioning of the mind and body), I had learned that there are medical lab ranges and then there are functional lab ranges (ranges within which your body functions at its best). So, even though my lab tests were normal for the medical lab range, they were outside of the functional lab range, which meant that my body was experiencing imbalances tied to my blood sugar.
So what to do??
At first, I tried herbs and supplements, but that was just expensive and at the time, I didn't really know what I was doing- mostly internet research and friend suggestions? Sound familiar?? Then I turned to my "healthy" diet. I didn't eat a lot of sweets so I really didn't think it would make a difference. However, in my research, I discovered how our body turns so many things that we don't even think about into glucose (sugar), and that those little things can throw us into imbalance. So I mustered up the mental strength and did my first sugar detox- unguided by any knowledgeable professional-- I had only a book and my first year nutrition knowledge.
Wow was my impression. Within a week, I felt tremendous- like my old self- my memory was better, the brain fog lifted, my skin looked younger, my energy boosted. I was amazed.
So I continued to learn and implement, and saw first hand how changing my food, my mental mindset, and certain lifestyle habits related to stress, sleep, activity, living on purpose, connection and community are really our medicines. Even small steps in these areas will change your health and your life. Since then, I have continued the journey and, as a result of ongoing 80/20 good eating and lifestyle habits, my fibroids and breast cysts are gone, my blood pressure normalized, my mind and energy are good for a ____ year old (smile), and my life has changed to where I am doing what I love.
