Earlier this week, students in 6th period Human Studies at Houston High School had a special visit from Kat Sawyer of Kats Sourdough and Juice Bar ! Kat shared about the fermentation process and explained why sourdough can be a healthier choice compared to many traditional breads found at the grocery store.

To make the experience even more hands-on, she brought dough samples for students to shape and take home to bake themselves. This connected perfectly with our recent learning as students have been exploring all of the food groups, including the grains group.

A big thank you to Kat’s Sourdough for helping bring learning to life in such a fun and meaningful way! Germantown Municipal School District Action for Healthy Kids Tennessee Department of Health UofM College of Health Sciences

Houston High School HOSA students recently created an informative video focused on processed foods, trans fats, and the health concerns connected to them. As part of the video, students gave a history lesson on processed foods and explored how food production and eating habits have changed over time.

They also highlighted the impact of ultra-processed foods, which are often easily available, heavily marketed, and commonly consumed—or overconsumed—in today’s world. Their message helped bring attention to the health concerns linked to diets high in ultra-processed foods and trans fats, including increased risks for heart disease and other long-term health issues.

Great job to these students for using their voices to educate others and promote healthier choices through meaningful, real-world learning! Earlier this week in Lifespan, students took part in a fun and eye-opening toddler simulation activity. Students balanced a paper plate on top of their heads while following directions to draw different items. When they finally looked at their drawings, they quickly realized their work looked a lot like something a toddler might create!

This activity helped students reflect on an important part of early childhood development: toddlers often know what they want to do, but their motor skills and coordination do not always allow it to happen the way they imagine. That gap can lead to frustration, especially as toddlers are learning independence. A great hands-on lesson that brought development to life for our students! Houston High School Nutrition Class recently traveled to Farmington Elementary School to teach the entire 2nd grade about nutrition and healthy eating through the MyPlate program.

This was a great extension of learning for Farmington’s 2nd graders, who had just begun a unit focused on healthy eating. HHS students made the lesson even more engaging by creating their own playdough and bringing it along for students to use to build foods and fill their plates using the MyPlate model.

It was awesome to see high school students leading, teaching, and helping younger students build healthy habits in such a fun and hands-on way. Great job to these student leaders for making nutrition education creative, meaningful, and memorable. This morning’s Houston Hearts Club meeting was a special one as we celebrated leadership, service, and an incredible milestone for Houston High School.

We were proud to recognize this year’s current board members for their outstanding leadership and commitment: Annie Phillips, Dylan Hudson, Bailey Johnson, Ella Dacus, Emma McNease, Evan Neas, and Mason Grace.

We also officially passed the leadership torch to next year’s board as incoming President Dylan Hudson announced her board: Paige Cho, McKayla Tharpe, Cruz Winsett, Evan Neas, John Fondaw, and Samhita Abhyankar.

We also recognized our seniors who earned their Heart Strings honor cord through dedicated service and teaching hours, a reflection of the meaningful impact they’ve made through Houston Hearts Club.

And of course, we celebrated a tremendous accomplishment for Houston High School: 84% of the student body is now CPR certified — that’s 1,500 students equipped with lifesaving knowledge and skills.

So proud of this amazing group of student leaders and all that Houston Hearts Club continues to accomplish. Excited for what comes next! Germantown Municipal School District American Heart Association - Tennessee UofM College of Health Sciences Germantown Fire Department
