Andy Martin serves as the School Health Director for Germantown Municipal

School District (GMSD), where he leads district-wide health and wellness initiatives that impact both students and staff. With a background in physical education and a passion for preventative health, Andy oversees school nurses, PE programs, emergency preparedness, and state-mandated safety trainings. From CPR and Stop the Bleed trainings to hydration challenges and podcast episodes on sun safety, Andy is known for blending strategy with creativity to build a healthier school culture. A Leadership Germantown graduate and recipient of the Jim Roberts Leadership Award, Andy is also a trusted collaborator and communicator who works closely with local businesses, staff, and students to bring innovative health programs to life. Whether he’s organizing the GMSD Kickoff, leading the Houston Hearts Club, or designing an epic flyer, Andy leads with purpose, professionalism, and a whole lot of heart.

April 2026 was another great reminder that GMSD employees are worth celebrating! 💙

Our GMSD Employee Appreciation Tour continued this month, and we are so thankful for the incredible community supporters who pour into our teachers, staff, and employees. Their generosity helps us recognize the people who show up every day for students, families, and our schools.

Through this new system of appreciation, HR and Coordinated School Health have taken staff wellness and employee recognition to the next level. It is not just about prizes or visits — it is about making sure our people feel seen, valued, and appreciated for the important work they do.

There are moments that remind you exactly why we do what we do—and Horizon’s Field Day at Houston High School was one of them. ☀️💙

This annual event is always a highlight, but this year carried an even deeper meaning as our Houston Middle School SPED students joined alongside our HHS SPED students for a day full of connection, movement, and joy. What made it special wasn’t just the games or activities—it was the smiles, the encouragement, the high-fives, and the genuine bonds being formed across schools.

Seeing our students come together in such a natural, uplifting way is something you can’t replicate. It’s powerful. It’s meaningful. And it’s exactly what building a supportive, inclusive community looks like in action.

❤️ Houston Hearts Club in Action! ❤️

The Houston Hearts Club from Houston High School was back at Crosstown Concourse leading another Hands-Only CPR training, and we could not be more proud of the continued impact this student-led group is making in our community.

This partnership between Houston Hearts Club, Crosstown Concourse, and the American Heart Association - Tennessee continues to be incredibly meaningful. What began from a real-life medical emergency at Crosstown, where CPR and AED use helped save a life, has grown into an opportunity to educate, empower, and prepare others to respond when every second matters.

Our students are not just learning life-saving skills — they are helping teach them. Through these trainings, Houston Hearts Club is helping build confidence, awareness, and readiness among Crosstown staff and community members.

We are so grateful for Crosstown Concourse for valuing emergency preparedness and for welcoming our students into this important work. Partnerships like this are exactly what community health is all about: people coming together, learning together, and taking steps that could one day save a life.

Today, we had the honor of recognizing a long-term substitute at Riverdale School with the District’s Certificate of Heroism for their quick thinking and courageous action.

During lunch last week, a student began choking and needed immediate help. Without hesitation, Mary Cerniway stepped up, responded quickly, and performed the Heimlich maneuver, helping to save a student’s life.

Moments like this remind us just how important it is to have caring, prepared, and compassionate people in our schools. We are incredibly grateful for Mary's calm response, courage, and willingness to act when it mattered most.

Houston High School was proud to host the first of many Mental Health Workshops at Houston High School, led by HHS Social Worker Denise Fisher.

Students and families participated in meaningful sessions focused on mental wellness, communication, stress management, and supporting healthy minds both at school and at home.

Thank you to all the presenters, families, students, and staff who helped make this important event possible. This is just the beginning as HHS continues building meaningful opportunities to support healthy minds and brighter futures. 💚

There’s just something special about Senior Field Day! One last chance to come together, laugh, compete, and celebrate before the next chapter begins.

Today at Houston High School, our seniors did exactly that. From friendly competitions to all-out team battles, it was a day filled with energy, teamwork, and plenty of unforgettable moments. 💪🎉

Events like this are more than just fun (though there was plenty of that). They’re a reminder of how important it is to stay active, support one another, and enjoy the journey along the way. Physical activity, teamwork, and school spirit were on full display and it was awesome to see.

Last night was one of those moments that reminds you why this work matters.

The Houston Hearts Club from Houston High School stepped up in a big way—helping lead a Hands-Only CPR and AED training for the team at Crosstown Concourse. A special shoutout to HHS junior and Houston Hearts Board Member Evan Neas, who did an outstanding job leading the training. Students teaching life-saving skills to adults… that’s powerful.

This partnership led by and coordinated by the American Heart Association - Tennessee is more than just a training, it’s a mission. And it’s personal.

Several months ago, the CEO of Crosstown Concourse experienced a severe cardiac emergency. His life was saved because people nearby knew how to respond with CPR and an AED. That moment sparked something bigger and now we’re turning it into action.

We’re proud to share that this is just the beginning. Together, we’ll continue working with Crosstown to:
❤️ Provide ongoing CPR & AED trainings
⚡ Build confidence in emergency response
🏫 Help implement structured emergency response teams using the Project ADAM model

Huge credit to our Houston Hearts students for leading with courage, purpose, and leadership, especially Evan for taking the lead. They’re not just learning these skills, they’re living them and passing them on.
