Anytime someone pushes back against adhd as a diagnosis, I hear one of two things.
1. It doesn't really exist. Just a few days ago, in a personal interaction, I was told something to the effect of, 'adhd and q***r are just made-up labels that no one had when I was a kid.' I'm still shaking my head at that one.
2. The other thing I hear is, 'maybe it's real, but so many people are diagnosed now. Not all those people could possibly have it.' It's a modified version of #1 - sometimes it's real, but sometimes it's not.
There are explanations for increased adhd diagnosis. I'm happy to see this article mentions that girls and women are finally getting diagnosed, a big reason diagnosis is up.
Rates of ADHD diagnosis are rocketing in developed countries. A professor of child and adult psychiatry explains why.
