Ah, the irony...

"A new study shows that cutting social media use for just one week can reduce mental health symptoms, like anxiety and depression, in young adults."

I've been thinking about grief a lot. It's always there, partly because I'm a therapist, but also because someone in my extended family died recently – of diabetes complications, which hits close to home. Also, it's that time of year, when there's pressure and expectations to be happy, but in reality, many (most?) people experience a range of complicated feelings, including grief.

Anyway, I came across this lovely example of channeling grief into a creative pursuit, which I fully endorse as both an art therapist and just another person on this mortal coil.

Art vending machines, so fun!

The little prints remind me of the artist trading cards I made once upon a time. Kind of feeling inspired to make those again.

I've started offering individual art therapy at Say It With Clay. It's all clay work, different from what we do at Prism, but a unique option for people who are intrigued by creative arts therapy, but reluctant to draw or paint.

To the ones we miss and the ones still fighting, your stories matter more than the silence around them.

This International Survivors of Su***de Day, we remind you: surviving is not weakness; it’s love. Everyone deserves safety, openness, and a chance to thrive.

May today honor those we’ve lost as we fiercely protect who’s still here.

Mental health and the NFL in the news I've been following this past week.

The bad new was the death of Marshawn Kneeland of Dallas. Having lost a family member to su***de and working with clients who've lost someone to su***de, news like this always hits hard.

After Kneeland's death, Hayden Hurst of Baltimore spoke out about his mental health struggles, including surviving a su***de attempt.

Lastly, even though it's not ideal for Philly that Jair Alexander is stepping away, after being traded to the team, it's so important and encouraging to see him being transparent about his mental health and actively taking care of himself. https://people.com/eagles-jaire-alexander-taking-break-football-mental-health-11847920

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Jaire Alexander is stepping away from football to focus on his physical and mental health as he considers retirement, multiple outlets reported on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Anytime someone pushes back against adhd as a diagnosis, I hear one of two things.

1. It doesn't really exist. Just a few days ago, in a personal interaction, I was told something to the effect of, 'adhd and q***r are just made-up labels that no one had when I was a kid.' I'm still shaking my head at that one.

2. The other thing I hear is, 'maybe it's real, but so many people are diagnosed now. Not all those people could possibly have it.' It's a modified version of #1 - sometimes it's real, but sometimes it's not.

There are explanations for increased adhd diagnosis. I'm happy to see this article mentions that girls and women are finally getting diagnosed, a big reason diagnosis is up.

Rates of ADHD diagnosis are rocketing in developed countries. A professor of child and adult psychiatry explains why.

Happy to be able to contribute a mask to the Say It With Clay Faces of Value fundraiser auction on Nov 1st.

Even though one of my college majors was ceramics, I've primarily been doing mixed media collage for years and almost never work with clay, so this was a fun trip in the way-back machine.

It still needs to be bisque fired, glazed & fired again so it will be shineeey!

When a client's session is over, if there's leftover paint or other art materials that can't be easily saved for another day, I'll try to repurpose it. This is one I've added to a few times over the last few months.
